Tile vital statistics for the Dunedin district for the past year show that there has been a slight falliijg-off in the total number of births, a slight increase in the deaths, and a marked decline in the number of marriages. The figures are as follows, the numbers for the previous corresponding period being placed afterwards in brackets; December: Births 105 (163), deaths 60 (78), marriages 81 (90). December quarter: Births 584 (432), deaths 215 (233), marriages 180 (206). Year 1922: Births 1623 (1689), deaths 918 (883), marriage® 687 (801). Of these marriages 117 wore celebrated in the registrar's olfioe last year and 101 this year. On New Year’s Day morning Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., held a brief gifting of tho Police Court when a man named William Grainger was charged with drunkenness at Morrison's, Palmerston South, on December 30. Sir James Allen (says our London correspondent., writing on November 24) has obtained from the Admiralty thu “ship’s book’’ of 11.M.5. New Zealand. Ho has also obtained from the Admiralty many articles of sentimental value which in due course will be forwarded to the dominion. No arrangement® have yet been made with regard to the New Zealand war memorial in Palestine. Lord Al’enby has always had in mind a big scheme in wmch the Homo country and all the dominions combine. The proposal is to erect a monument on Mount Scopus, an extension of the Mount of Olives ridge, and. the dominions would each be represented by a bastion conforming to the central monument. Sir James Allen will shortly be reporting on this matter to the New Zealand Government. An accident occurred at the Mctuhora quarry on Wednesday (says the Gisborne correspondent of the Christchurch Press), when an engine and six metal trucks left the line and rolled 30ft down a steep bank. The train was fully loaded, and was running from the quarry to the crusher, and at a bend the brakes were applied to check the speed. A light drizzling rain was falling, and the narrow track was very greasy. When the brakes wore applied the wheels skidded and produced no effect, on the speed. The jar, however, tore o:ie of the rails from its fastenings, andr the train left the track and plunged down the bank. The driver and fireman left the engine without difficulty. The wooden portions of the trucks were damaged, but the ironwork was unharmed. The engine escaped all damage save for the crashing of the cab, which struck a stump in its descent. The quarry company will have little trouble in reconstructing tire line, and will proceed with horse hauling until the engine is again available. At the Auction Rooms of Messrs Harnrer, Rooko and Company, on November 11 (says our London correspondent) an envelope with the old embossed 2s 5d stamp of Natal thereon (printed in Pietermaritzburg in 1857) sold for £l3. The envelope was a gift to a Mission Church in Now Zealand and the proceeds, without deduction of commission, are being forwarded to the Rev. O. F.
