GOLF.

NEW YEAR TOURNAMENT. The weather was good for golfing yesterday, when tho annual New Year tournament, under tho management of the Otago Golf Club, was continued on the Bulmacewen Links. There was a slight breeze blowing, which did not materially interfere with the play. Tho course was in splendid order, and some fine play was witnessed. The chief contest was the Amateur Championship, those left in being M. Macbeth and C. 13. Wight, both of St. Clair. The final is to bo played to-day, tho competition being for 36 holes, which is a departure from tho customary 18 holes. Tho tournament has attracted competitors from as far north as Wellington. Tho inter-club match, particulars of which appear hereunder, was held concurrently with tho two qualifying rounds of tho Amateur Championship. In the contest for the Amateur Championship of Otago between Macbeth and Ross at the first hole Macbeth won in 5, and at the second he was stymied with his third, but managed to get half in "4. The third hole was halved in 4, and\ Macbeth won the fourth in 2, and tho fifth In 4, Ross getting in the rough. In the sixth Ross won in 4, rpiasing his drive. Tho seventh was won by Macbeth in 4. In tho eighth Macbeth missed his drive, and Ross won in 4. In tho ninth Macbeth stymied Ross, and won in 4, thus making him 3 up at the turn. The tenth hole was won by Ross in 4, and ‘the eleventh was halved. Ross won the ■twelfth hole in 3, and Macbeth the- thirteenth in 5. The fourteenth was won by Ross in 3, and the fifteenth was halved in 4, and the sixteenth in 5. The seventeenth was halved in 3, and the eighteenth was won by Rosa in 4, making the match all square. The ninteenth hole was halved in 5, Macbeth missing his put for 4. The twentieth was again halved in 5. In the twenty-first hole both players found tho rough, and Ross failed to .get his 4, Macboth holing out, and winning the round on the twenty-first hole. In Friday’s Bogey Handicap M. W. Horton and C. Finlayson tied for second place, and in playing off on Saturday morning M. W. Horton won. M. Macbeth and C. Finlayson, who tied in the Medal Handicap played off on Saturday morning, Macbeth proving the winner, and Finlayson becoming the runner up. A putting competition is being held daily during the tournament, and on Friday this was won by Macbeth with 35. On Saturday it was secured by C. Bennett with 34. To-day, when play will be continued, the prizes will he presented, and the attendance of ladies is specially invited.
