COLUMBA COLLEGE

DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES. The annual break-up of Columba College took place yesterday afternoon, at the college, Bishopscourt, in the presence of a large number of ladies. A platform had been erected in the grounds, and upon this a -very entertaining hour and a-half was given by the pupils, senior and junior. 'The hymn, “O Como, All Ye Faithful,” Was sung by the children, and prayer was then offered up. Miss H. P. Maunsell i gave a scripture recitation, and the girls • ang “O Columba, Hail to Thee.” “La Mihtaire” was presented by the senior dancing class, ‘‘Little Brown Brother” sung by the juniors, and an attractive dance given by the combined junior and senior < lasses. Miss J. Hould gave a clever'recital of “Home For The Holidays,” and the senior pupils sang a two-part song ! very successfully. A pierrot dance bv the junior class followed, and a most amusing scene from “The Mill on the Floss” was enacted by the elocutionary pupils. A pianoforte duo for two pianos, played by Misses D. Manchester, N. Cunningham, F. Meadowcroft, and N. Will, and physical drill by the physical culture class concluded the entertainment by the girls. The accompanists were Misses M. E. Pryde and P. Westland. The Rev. J. J. Cairney expressed his pleasure at being present, and seeing so many friends attending the break-up. It was an evidence of the interest taken in (ho work of the college. He would like to express appreciation of the excellent work done, as shown in the programme that .-Ttornoon. The girls had acquitted themselves very well indeed. The college was still maintaining its place in the estimation of the community. It was yet in its infancy, and had much to be thankful for in connection with the progress made. It had met with strenuous work at the com-

mencement, and from what had been seer that afternoon those present would understand something in the progress made He would like to pay a tribute of respect to the memory of one who had done much iii founding the college, Rex. Alexandei Whyte. He would' also like to mention the name of Mr W. S. Fitzgerald, and Mr Sydney Wolf for the good work they had done l in connection with the college, the latter of whom had trained the girls in singing for a number of years. In the principal’s report it was mentioned that the number on the roll was 172—100 in the secondary division and 72 in the primary division. When they looked at results they would see that the college had done good_ work. Twelve pupils had obtained matriculation, 18 proficiency, and 2 comnetency. In public service two had gained high places. While they were glad to see the results obtained by the college ho would be sorry to think that the training had been to these particular results. He was glad to see in the principal’s report a reference to the training of character, which after all was the principal part of a teacher’s work. Knowledge was no doubt pot to be despised, and was held in high esteem, but it was not the most important matter bv any means. The girls in Standards IV and V were commencing the fateful years of their lives, and what they had been trained up to in the college they would probably be in after years. It was good that, the characters of the girls should he so trained in the college that when they went out into the world they would taka an honourable part, in Country. Emnire, and Church. He was afraid that education was largely a matter of training boys and girls to be selfish, and making them think of themselves rather than others. None of us could afford to stand apart by ourselves We wore a. part of a whole. Ho mentioned that Mr W. Downie Stewart was to have been present and given an address, but he had been called away to Wellington. Miss Ross, the lady principal of the college. offered her congratulations to the girls neon having done so well in almost every branch. If a girl had not ability in one direction, Miss Ross pointed out, she might shine in another. It was a red letter day for the girls leaving college, ‘and it was to be hoped that the graduation point reached by the reception of their diplomas in life would result in the development of

character Mr Cairney had been speaking oh fihe expressed her sincere thanks to all those who had taken an interest in the college, making special reference to the parents of the pupils. Incidentally, in the course of the few words Miss Ross said, she mentioned that Collimba College had only been in existence eight years. Miss_ Ross, then presented the prizes, bestowing upon each recipient some kindly and encouraging little remark. Mr James Begg. representing the Navy League, said the league was very pleased to have the support of the college in its work, and he_ wanted to thank Miss Ross for her sustained interest in the league. The subjects this year for the essays had been a little difficult, especially the subject for juniors. The result of the esshvs was that those competing would have obtained a great deal of information which they might not otherwise have obtained. The essays written upon (be senior subjects had teen -very good, and the examiner had made complimentary remarks concerning them. It must be realised much more bv the'compclitors what the sea meant to us. Could we in New Zealand imagine ourselves without, ships coming hero? If shins were not coming and going we would he very poor people indeed. Mr Bogy went on to point out that trams, tram rails, and many other things were brought here by overseas_ vessels. We honed to make many things in Now Zealand, but ns it was we could not live without sea communication with other narts of the Empire, and with other nations. Mr Begg then distributed the Nnvv League prizes, and the break-up terminated vcw shortly afterwards. Following is the prize list : SECONDARY DEPARTMENT.
