IMMIGRATION SCHEME
CANADA WANTS FARMERS. BIG PUBLICITY CAMPAIGN. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright OTTAWA, November 28. The Minister of the Interior (Mr Stewart), speaking at the Canadian Club, Montreal, made an important announce merit regarding the Government's impend ing immigration plans, and asked for the support of the financial interests for the proposals. Ho said that the first step would be to comb the western part of the United States by means of an inten sive advertising campaign to attract tenantfarmers; who are now paying rents from seven to 10 times greater than they would pav in Canada. A secorfd publicity campaign would be conducted in Great Britain and "certain countries in Northern Europe, the whole of whose nationals it was considered would make excellent immigrants. An effort would be made to secure farmers with funds, but tenant farmers would also be encouraged to come. The large Canadian land owners in the West would be asked to release part of their holdings lor tilling on a- tenant co-nperation basis. Mr Stewart did riot mention the question of granting credits to prospective settlers.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
