THE ETHICS OF PROHIBITION.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— Why do certain misguided people want prohißition? Presumably because they wish to prevent a few other people from taking an overdose of alcohol. How many people do take too much alcohol in New Zealand?. I venture to suggest not 1 per cent, of the population. Here we surely have bigotry run riot. Because, say. 1 per cent, of the population offends the remaining 99 per cent, are to be punished. A woman steals a pair of silk stockings from a draper's shop. Such things are known to happen. Where does the crime he? Against the woman for giving way to temptation. or against the draper for selling silk stockings? Tile prohibitionist would say against the draper, and the only remedy he would be capable of thinking of would be the total prohibition of silk stockings throughout New Zealand! —l am, etc., Jnsnou*
