CALEDONIAN SOCIETY OF OTAGO.

ANNU AL SPORTS. Shortly after 2 p.m. on Saturday a fairly large number of people had assembled on the Caledonian Ground to attend the sports meeting initiated by the Caledonian Society of Otago and -within half an hour the number present had materially increased. Tho gathering was regarded by some of the officials of tho society as highly satisfactory, and a distinct advance upon what has been experienced within recent years. The weather during tho afternoon was all that could bo desired. Tho various events were confined to juveniles, who entered in large numbers, though they did not in all cases face the starter. In view of the fact that tbs competitions were limited to juniors the prizes given were on liberal lines, and the contests were engaged in by tho youths in a vigorous and whole-hearted manner, some of them being especially interesting to the spectators Amongst the moro interesting may be mentioned the relay races which produced some excitement. In a crowd such as was present there arc, always sections that lean towards ond or another branch of sport, and as there .was conconsiderable variety in tho programme the public taste was well catered for. Of running events, from 100 yards to one mile, 'thoro were a number. and under this head may be included the relay races just referred to. There were high and broad jumps, javelin throwing, a quickstep competition for schools’ bands, and several opportunities were oSered for a display ot dancing. In the running events the first and second in each heat were qualuied to start in the final, though a record was kept of the competitors who came third The playing and marching of the schools bands attracted - much attention, and tile competing bands were warmly applauded. In this connection the winning band, winch turned out to bo that representing Albany Street School, holds tho Andco Shield tul the end of October next year, when it has to bo returned to tho Caledonian Society, and in addition to the ordinary prizes tho drum-majors of tho first three bands aro to be presented with medals. Both the marching and playing was commendable. Ihe judge of tho musical portion of the com petition was Signor Squariso and the military judges wore officers and warrant o ™ ce £ a of the Dunedin regimental district, Mr 1. I • Williamson acting as timekeeper. The head Officials of the Caledonian Society were for the most part present, and took an active interest in everything that was go mg forward, the detailed work being entrusted to a large body of gentlemen who performed their duties quite efficiently. Ihe Press representatives were not overlooked, and received every assistance iu obtaining results Tho sports were gob off punctually, and were concluded only a few minuts. after programme time.
