CLUTHA SHOW
SECOND DAY. Tlie weather could hardly have been more disappointing than it was yesterday for the second clay of the Olutha and Matau A. and P. Society’s show. The morning P r 9' raised a fine day, but douds made their appearance in the sky early in the forenoon, and shortly after noon a steady, soaking ram set in which continued throughout the rest of the day. The result -was that the grand stand soon became crowded, but the extra money received in this way was not sufficient to make up for the decrease in the attendance, as compared with last year, and the total takings dropped from £lB5 to £l4B. Unfortunately, the weather is no respecter of persons or societies, and the committee can only hope that the difference, which after all does not amount to a very large sum, will be made up on some more tavourable occasion in the future. Both the Brass and Pipe Bands were m attendance, and despite the unpleasant conditions they turned out frequently aiM enlivened proceedings with musical selections. The cattle were the feature of the show, and were a credit to a district which is known as a stock centre. They were all in excellent condition, well grown, and carefully brought up to the best show form. j.he Ayrshires were an exceptionally fine lot, and the principal exhibitor in this section, Mr G. R. Herron, of Pukerau, has every reason to bo proud of his exhibit. His two-year-old bull took both the championship and the prize for the Lest _ Ayrshire animal on the ground. The Shorthorns were not so numerous, but were excellent specimens of their type. The Jerseys, also, wore a woll-odhditioned, likelylooking herd. The fat bullock attracted the most entries in its section, and here again the general standard of quality was high. The Friesian cattle, in the opinion of the judge, were not up to the condition which he would expect, considering the district from which tnoy came. Mr L. Colbourne’s champion cow was Tie feature of the section, although, if the two-year-old heifer had oeon shown in full milk it probably would have won. The champion bull was also an excellent type, but the yearling heifers were not in the best condition. The judge ot the crossbred dairv cattle described the cow exhibited by Mr Jas. Taylor (Stirling) (which took tho Clutha Dairy Company’s gold modal) as being a very line animat and out on its own. The winning cow in mo cottar’s class was a very fine type of Jersey, but tho other classes all showed a bit of purebred Shorthorn. In the section for draught horses, the judge said they would be a credit to any ring. He gave special praise to the horses shown by Messrs Fleming Brqs., of Crookston, who won the female championship and several other important sections." The champion card, and silver dup for entries was taken by tho Clutha Clydesdale Club’s Springneld Monarch, Mr J. M'Leod (Maungatua) secured the Clydesdale Horse Society’s gold modal with an exceptionally fine liuy, and taken all through the heavy horses fully maintained the high standard which has come to be expected of the Clutha Show. The light horses made up an important section, and shaped well as fo quality and numbers. Some first-class mounts and harness workers were shown, and there were large fields in the riding classes. Tho_ jumping events were put through in spite of the rain and the slippery state of the ground, and, as usual, they aroused much interest. The following completes the prize list:— CATTLE. Aybshires.
