SIXTY YEARS AGO

Quito a “Canvas Town” has sprung up on th u vacant ground skirting tho Harbour towards Pdiohot Bay. Scores cf tents are erected in convenient positions, and sheltered from the cold winds by being placed under ilio lee of clumps of bush. The plentiful supply of fresh water which exists close to this spot, and a number of stumps of old trees which furnish firewood, seem to have made this locality a favourite camp-ing-ground. Most of the occupants are employed at Bel! Hill and are exceedingly quiet anu woll-condiuctecl. WATERMEN’S BOAT RACE.

A boat race which came oil on Saturday aftenuion in the harbour attracted a great, number of .spectators, seemed to plea so them all, and might; wc should think, with very little trouble bo made the means of initiating a movement for a. Dunedin regatta, . . Four boats were entered. Tho quarterdeck of tho Geelong steamer, which was lying at the New Jetty, formed a convenient post for Captain Dickie, deputy harbourmaster, who was very fitly selected to be the judge and readily undertook the office; four o'clock on Saturday afternoon was fixed for tho start; and a course of nearly four mnes and a-half was marked on by throe moored boats, as follows i—Fi’cm the Now Jetty to near the north-easterly point of tho harbour; thence across to Grant’s Braes; thence to Anderson’s Bay; and tUonco to the starting-point. . . Boon after four o’clock, tho boats wore ranged in the following order, counting from the pier, tho position being settled by lot: 1. Alert, white flag, D. Mackenzie, coxswain; George Mason, stroke; Peter Andrew, John Daly, JVilliam Maokersy, and Frederick Patterson. 2. —Marion, white with red cross. P, Johnson, coxswain; Robert Skelloy, stroke; J. Smith, T. Bradley, A. Hoglund, and W. Whitnell. 3—Eclipse, red. Wm. Phillips, coxswain ; David O’Brien, stroke; J ames Baxter, 15dward M’Kenna, John MacIrersy, and John Keith. 4.—City of Hobart, bine. Thomas Farrell, coxswain; Wm. Thompson, stroke; James Fletcher, Frederick Bannister, Louis Engellioff, and Jacob Turnbull. . . '.t he boats came up, the first three at a splendid pace, as follows, —
