UNREST IN INDIA
THE AKHALI TROUBLE. LEADERS’ COMPLAINTS. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. DELHI, October 15. A committee of non-co-operators which was investigating the alleged police excesses against the Akhahs has dispersed. Its last bulletin complains that no evidence was tendered on behalf of the Government. The Akhali leaders have issued a communique complaining of insufficient accommodation in the local gaol, stating that 900 prisoners were there, though the accommodation was only sufficient for 150. They complain also of the food, vigorous counter-propaganda against the Akhalis is being issued, pointing out that the Akhalis are not the only Sikhs, and they do not represent the other sects. If the Akhalis seize the shrines, the religions liberties of the other sects will be seriously affected. If one sect takes possession of the shrines forcibly, it is quite likely that another sect wjll act similarly; consequently, instead of peace, there will be continual religious strife.—A. and N.Z. Cable. . RECALCITRANT MAHSUDS. BRITISH PATROL AMBUSHED. DELHI, October 15. On Sunday last a motor natrol was ambushed by the Maksuds between Khirgi and Manya. All were hit except one soldier, who immediately brought a Lewis gun into action, while the driver, though mortally wounded, drove on 1000 yards before he collapsed. The car hit a culvert and overturned, but the enemy did not attack. Our casualties were three killed and and one death from wounds.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
