Several of tho matches in the first round of the annual j “knock-out” competition of the Otago Golf Club were played on Saturday afternoon on the Balmacowon Links. The competition is a handicap one, the difference in the Bogey scores being allowed. The playing conditions were excellent, with just .sufficient; wind to test accuracy. Tho results on Saturday wore as follow : J. R. Callender beat R. 11. Barron, 8 and 6. . , „ C.- L. M'Kellnr beat G. 11. G. Smith, 2 up. D Samuel beat J. W. Gow. 1 up. C. F. Bennett beat G. (Received Oct. 15, at 11.35 p.m.) At Nowhavon. Connecticut, Kirkwood ami Hagen defeated Swectscr and Bobby Andrew 0 over 18 hmoles, 2 up and 1 to play. LADIES’ ENGLISH CHAMPIONSHIP. RETAINED BY MISS WETIIERED. AFTER CLOSE SEMI-FINAL. LONDON. October 14.. ’ (Received October 15, at 5.5 p.m.) Miss Wotliered won tho final of the English Ladies’ Golf Championsmp at Hunstanton, defeating Miss Stocker, 7 up and 6 to play. . ■ Miss Leitch did not compete, consequently Miss Wothercd was. a hot favourite" froth the beginning, and until she reached the romi-final she went through comfortably with big margins. By virtue of her imperturbable steadiness in ihe semi-final Miss Molly Gourlay, a county player from Surrey, taking every advantage of Mbs Woihercd’s mistakes, which were nuinea-ous, was two up at tho twelfth hole. Eventually the crowd of 1000 followers saw Miss Wclhcred putting on tho eighteenth green for tho retention of her title. Miss Gourlay just missod a,long piitt, and this enabled Miss Wethorcd to square the match. Tho stroke score was Mias AVethorcd 77 to Miss Gourlay'® 79. Miss Wetlioml was lucky at, tho nineteenth green, winning the closest 'championship match of her career by holing a six foot put!.—A. and N.Z. Gable.
