PROHIBITION IN THE UNITED STATES.
TO THE F.DITOJL Sin,—From a financial paper here I learn that tlio result of tho effort to enforce prohibition in the United States is that the State and Federal Governments, taken together, have lost £100,000.000 annual income from licenses, etc., and general taxation ha s been increased to make this up; there has been created, at a cost of £10,000,000 per annum. a great army of detectives, spies, etc., in order to attempt to carry prohibition into effect; and there Ims been created another army of “bootloggers” dealing in wines, rum, and spirits partly smuggled in from the countries round about, and its members take a. joint profit of something like £150,000,000 per annum.— I am, ole,, - C.
