FRANCE WANTS BUTTER
NEW ZEALAND OFFERED ANOTHER MARKET. France wants New Zealand 'butter, and moreover wants it direct instead of via London’ as at present. By slipping direct to Dunkirk, where there is excellent cold storage, there would be a saving to the producers of from 15s to 20s por cwt. Mr Roger Bartlicleray, member of a firm of bans brokers, arrived in Auckland by the Malcura this week to endeavour to show the New Zealand dairy people what a fine market there is in Franco if it were only exploited. 'Mr Bartbelemy points out that Franco has for many years imported butter, and though the amount consumed is increasing the amount produced has greatly diminished. In Australia, Mr Barthelemy succeeded in getting two refrigeration steamers a month put on the berth for Marseilles and Dunkirk, and he hopes to induce the New Zealand producers to move in the matfer. Last season Mr Barthelemy’a firm sold about 4000 boxes a week during the five winter months, and the net price was 10s to 20s per cwt. higher than the London maikct. The firm had to charge 12s Gd a cwt to cover charges, and if the butter had been shipped direct it would have shown 22s 6d to 32s Gd in advance of the London prices. Direct shipment is the keynote of the trade between New Zealand and France, and Mr Barthelemy hopes to show what an excellent thing it would ho for the New Zealand dairymen to have another string to then 'tow.
