WORKERS’ EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIATION

The fwouty-fourth ledum of flie complete fierier in “ Economics,’' delivered by (ho Hcv. C. B. Jordim, M.A., F.It.E.S., cf Balclutha, In tlio Kaitangata class of the W.E.A., was Attended by a considerable number of nicinInrs on Monday evening last. The lecturer has followed pretty closely during the session' the lines of treatment given to the subject bv Professor Henry Clay, of the Manchester I’niversity. The title of the lecture was “Wealth and ’Welfare: Business and Morality.” Some, leading ideas, he said, were, these: The subordination of-wealth to .welfare; the economic organisation wa.s only a partial vetlex of the moral standards of the- age; the economic organisation reacted on our moral standards; modern economic influences were decidedly materialistic in (heir tendency; wealth was only one among many contributing factors in welfare and not the most important; Iho mistaken 1 analogy of “economic laws" to the "laws of Nature”; business was subject to moral laws, like every other department of life: Die economic .organisation was canable of being moralised. An interesting discussion 'followed on such oucstinns ns “Are fhe changes in modern education materialistic in their tendency?" and "Do the majority of men have as their chief aim ill life the making of wealth?'' At the close of the meeting the Mayor (Mr AUchison), who is also president of the branch, addressed the meeting on the plans for next year, and, after discussion, it was unanimously decided to continue the sessions next year and to request the University Council to roapnoint Mr .lordan as tutor to the class; the subject (if Mr Jordan should be tutor) to bo ” Applied Economics.” A unanimous and hearty vole of thanks was passed to Mr J. W. Kenton for his 'zealous and self-sacrificing eeiviccs as class secretary.
