WEST HARBOUR COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the West Harbour Borough'Council, hold last night, was attended by the Mayor (Mi- H. E. Moller), and Crs W. Bark. E. Mitchell, I. Harndgc, J. Robb, O. French, J. Smith, A. Robertson, and J. Fraser. Mr A. S. Johnston wrote drawing attention to the bad state of the footpath leading up to his house at Burkes. He asked that some metal screenings be placed on it as soon as possible.—lt was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the inspector. The clerk, Ravensbournc School Committee. wrote asking for the use of the recreation ground for a cricket ground for the school boys.—Granted. The secretary. Otago Expansion League, wrote asking if it was possible to improve (he portion of the North Harbour road that runs through West Harbour.—lt was decided to inform the-league that the council would do its best, to keep the road in a satisfactory condition. The Minister of Public Works wrote stating that the (own clerk's contention that there was still £2OO owing to (ho council on last year's estimates appeared to bo based on the assumption (bat if a vole of. say, £2OO, appeared for a certain road on two consecutive years’ estimates, two separate grants were indicated, and that the sum of £4OO was available for expenditure. This was only the case when the first amount was expended before the end of the financial rear in which if was provided—Mr .1. W. Monro, M.P., in a covering letter, said that that letter appeared to settle the matter. He would try to get another £2OO for the road put in the next Estimates.—lt was decided to ask for another £2OO for (ho road to be placed on the Estimates. _ A letter was received from (lie Undersecretary, Public Works Department, with reo-ard to the width of Grant street, which was only 55ft instead of 40ft (the nmmnnnt width for streets allowed bv (he -Municipal Corporation.- Act). As this street served a purely residential area and the grade was a very steep one, ho was prepared to recommend the Minister to approve exemption from the provision subject to the building line belli" set back 33ft from the centre line of the street.—The following resolution was passed: —“The West Harbour Borough Council, being the local authority having control of the herim-iler mentioned street, herein - declares that the provisions of section 117 of the Public Works Act, 1903. shall not apply lo Grant street in the township of Rothesay. The portion of Grant, si reel, to he exempted will be allotments numbered 16, 17, 18, and part 19. The Finance Committees report, winch showed (lie council's overdraft to be £549 9s Bd, was adopted.—The Works Committee drew’ attention to potholes on (he Main road.—lt was decided to repair the potholes at once, —Adopted.
