Y.M.C.A. CONCERT
The concert held last night fit, Burns Hall under the auspices of the Y.M.C.A. Ladies’ Auxiliary and arranged by Mr 11, P. Desmoulins proved to be an entertainment ot considerable merit. It was evidently greatly appreciated by the audience. The concert commenced with an instrumental trio by Messrs E. Miller, H. K. Trimmer, and L. Dykes, who gave with tine effect “The March in G” (Berlioz). Tin's effort was enthusiastically encored. Mr John Leach opened the vocal programme with Sanderson's Lnraine, Mrs Wilfred Andrews following with "iho Bird With the Broken Wing.” As an encore she sang “To slay at home is bett.” Mr W. E. Crewes showed his splendid voice to effect in “Five-and-twentv Hailornun” (Coleridge Taylor), and was heartily encored. Mrs Astley Black, who was in good form, rendered ‘‘The Willow,’’ and in the second part sang “A Nightingale in June,” singing also in a duet with Mrs Wilfred Andrews ‘‘Farewell Summer.” Miss Bessie Thomson was the only elocutionist on the programme, and delighted the audience with her recitation. Jl, is sometimes said that Dunedin must rely entirely upon its veterans for singers. Mr L. A. North, however, showed himself to be a. most pleasing singer with a fine presence. His rendering of “The Yeoman’s Wedding Song,” followed by Taylor's “Life and Death,” was a very fine effort. In place of an interval Mr Desmoulins, assisted by all the artists upon the stage, led the company in community singing, the innovation being a thorough success. In the second half a male quartet composed of Messrs Newton, Mills, Blackwood, and Cooper sang with fine spirit “The ■ Song of the Pettier.” their effort, being encored. The quartet is fortunate in the possession of a deep basso, and a tenor with a fine range. Mrs Andrews’s second contribution was “Yonder,” sung with skill and feeling. “The Last Cal!” was rendered bv Mr F. C. Cooper. Miss E. Payne and Mr L. A. North brought the programme to a close by the singing of Lohr's “The Day is Done.” The accompaniments were in the hands of Misses Adonia Aiken and Clara Hughes.
