FALSE PRETENCES

YOUNG MAN’S SWINDLE. A SHORT-LIVED CAREER. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, September 50. George Herry Stevens, a young man, was charged in the Magistrate's Court with attempted false pretences in connection with his venture entitled the Do Bourdo School of Journalism, He pleaded guilty, and liad nothing to say. The police stated that Stevens was for a short time on the staff of the New Zealand Times and Truth, but was dismissed for incompotoncy. He went to America as a steward, returned, and launched out as an instructor in journalism, charging £2O for the full course and £8 for an ordinary course. A detective who took the course deliberately made mistakes, some of which were uncorrected by the accused. Accused alleged that he had had four years’ experience on the. New Zealand Times and on various English papers, and had students in Australia and elsewhere. Between £4O ami £6O had been received in foes, mostly from women. Mr F. R, Hunt, S.M., said tbo police performed a public service in bringing such cases. lie _ inflicted a sentence of one month's imprisonment.
