OTAGO HARBOUR BOARD

The monthly mooting of (he Otago Harbour Hoard was hold last evening, and ■was attended by Messrs 11. C. Campbell (chairman), A. Cable, X. Galbraith, H. E. Moller, -1. A. Roberts, K. S. Ramsay. T. Seollay, J. 11. Walker, D. Larnach,.'; W. Wilkinson, T. H. Russell, .1. .M‘Donald, and J Loudon. GENERAL. ■ The Chairman staled that the net credit balance stood at £8374 12s 3d. A letter was. received from Messrs Spencer and Dunkley protesting against tho charges incurred in 'connection with, the expenses of tho renewal of their lease. —The matter was referred to the Reserves Committee. The, Town Clerk, Port Chalmers, wrote forwarding instalment (£260) of dock contribution (£500) duo for the year 1912, and thanking the board for a further donation towards Hie cost of Mussel Bay tunnel.— Noted. .Messrs .William,. Nees and Sons ■ (Ltd.) wrote stating that as they had purchased sections 18 and 19, block LXVIII, they wished to ask the hoard’s permission to remove the old buildings now on these sections and which are at present unoccupied. so that they could proceed with tho erection of an up-to-date warehouse on the *ite, which is at the corner of Harirow and Hanover streets. Mr London moved that tho request bo referred, to the Reserves Committee, with power to act. Tie thought that they should exercise caution in dealing with such an application. Tho motion was carried, and it was agreed that tho Reserves Committee should meet on Monday and visit the locality. Reserves committee. The Reserves Committee recommended in connection with Lake Logan, that the clause with respect to the communication, from Mondy and Stephens, submitting for approval draft clause for Washing-up Bill, m connection with the arrangement to exchange land (five acres) and buildings and the leasing of a further three acres with tho Education Board bo approved, iho committee recommended, with respect to (ho communication from the Union Steam Ship Company (Ltd.), asking the board to grant a ncw'lease to transferee of section 19, block LV, at present held by it, that the request be granted, subject to valuation adjustment. , Mr Galbraith moved the adoption of tho report. The report was adopted. The Harbourmaster reported that the Mole light had come into operation as Horn September 8— Mr Moller: The finest bit ot work carried out in the harbour. WORKS COMMITTEE. 'Tho Works Committee recommended in connection with road formation that with respect to tho engineer’s report the excavation of Bauchop street bo proceeded with. Tho committee recommended for approval the purchase of a “Rex ’ concrete mixer and a motor car for the Engineer s Department, the engineer to submit makers names and price to the board._ Mr Moller moved tho adoption of the report Ho said that the Mayor (Mr J. S. Douglas) had informed him that the council was prepared to pav £I9OO to the cost of tho deviation work at Pehchot Bay, tho men to be paid 12s per day. In another 10 weeks the £IOOO would, be spent. The report was adopted. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee recommended as follows:—With respect to the communication from Royal National Lifeboat Institution, asking donation to Binds, that tho board donate the sunt of £3 3s, With resped to the communication from oir Arthur rearson Memorial Fund, asking donation to funds, that, subject to a Validation Act a sum of £SO be donated ,F lrol ,'Sj the Dunedin Committee. The committee had to report with respect to tho communication from Captain George Thomson relative to tho payment of retiring allowance; that, as Captain Thomson withdraws his application to be paid in a. lump eum, it is recommended that his retiring allowance bo paid monthly. Tiie Harbourmaster reported that the harbour depths were as follow; — North Channel—4oft deep, 100 ft wide: Bend—33ft deep, 350 ft wide; Deborah Bay] —3oft deep, 300 ft wide; Victoria Channel,, (centre) 19ft deep, (sides) deep, 160 ft; " ICIO, SHIPPING RETURNS. Arrivals: .Coastal—26 vessels, 18,372 torla; intercolonial—six vessels, 11,958 tons;,, foreign—seven vessels, 40,855 tons; total* 39 vessels, 71,165 tons. Departures: Coastal -27 vessels, 20,034 tons; intercolonial—seven' vessels, 22,273 tons; foreign—four vessels, 22,612 tons; totals—33 vessels, 65,719 tons. WAR MEMORIAL FUND. Mr J. J. Clark, with Messrs J. Wilson and Captain Sundstrum waited on the board as a deputation to ask for a donation to the War Memorial Fund. They said that the committee in charge of the memorial had determined that within the next month or two a start should he made on the work The City Council had given the sum of £2009, ami they considered that the Harbour Board was an equally important body. They felt that this was a cause in which everyone should give generously. They were sure that the board would assist in erecting a fitting memorial to their gallant and glorious dead. ’Captain Sundstrum said that he trusted the board would give them at least £SOO. The Chairman said that the board had power to give. The deputation could rest assured that the board would do its best in the interests of the memorial. It was decided to refer the request to the Finance Committee to report to the next meeting of the board.
