ADMINISTRATION CONSISTENCY.

TO THE EDITOR. gm —Wo "my i' a g° a & l ' lpi Government on account of its many shortcomings, but we cannot accuse it of being consistent. Consistency is a crime from which our rulers shrink with horror. A short time ago Bishop Liston made a speech for which he was prosecuted. The Attorneygeneral, jealous for tho law's respect,, hastened to institute proceedings against the bishop on the ground that the speech in question was calculated to cause _ disorder among tho people. Bishop' Liston was held by the jury, who had received careful instruction from the judge on tho matter of sedition, to be innocent of any intent to cause disorder; and no disorder had been causod. Now, if the Attorneygeneral is consistent, ho should institute proceedings against the P.I'.A. organise tor saying things which were not only calculated to cause disorder, .but, which actually caused it, not once, but on throe occasions in different places--Greymuoth, .Feilding, and Taranaki. llis speech causod ■a riot'in one plnce, and with' the full knowledge of the effect of his speech he went ■and repealed it in two other places. Now, Sir why does not the Attorney-general, who was eager to preserve law and order in the case of Bishop Liston, show as much eagerness to preserve it in the case 6f Mr Howard Elliott? By the way, what was the name of tne person who wrote the phrase—" Measures not Men?" Some of those old writers held quaint ideas, did they not?—l am, etc., J. EOBIKSON. Oxford street, September 6.
