UNREST IN ITALY
FASCISTI’S ULTIMATUM. ) SITUATION STELL/fctRITIOAL. N / S\ Pien Association—By Telcgrsph—Copyright ROME, August 2. Despite the failure of the strike, the situation is critical. The Fascists’ ultimatum expires at midnight. All the Fascist deputies have returned to their constituencies for the purpose of demanding reprisals unless the strike is called off. If the Government fails to accede to the demands for dealing with the strikers, the Fascisti intend to take matters into their own hands. Some threaten to bum the trade union headquarters and to occupy the Chamber of Deputies. The rooms of the various Ministers are at present guarded by troops and machine-guns, while cavalry and infantry are encamped near tipi Colosseum. Meanwhile the Fascisti are running the public conveyances. There are quaint scenes in the streets. Elegant Fascist youths, dressed in the height of fashion, are driving motor-buses, while at Milan colonels, professors, barristers, and students are driving the tramcars. No fares are charged.—Times.
