PROPOSED UNIVERSITY CLUB
A further meeting of gentlemen interested in the formation of a University Club was held at the Medical School to consider the proposals of the interim committee sot up at the previous meeting. Dr Carmalt Jones announced that about 170 persons had signified their desire to become original members. It was felt that this was a most satisfactory response for so short a time, and it was taken as an indication that a club on the lines proposed will fill a real want. It was decided that as soon as 200 names had been received in writing the club should bo incorporated under the Incorporated Societies Act. The interim committee was constituted the first regular committee of the club, and its draft rules, which were submitted to the meeting, received general approval. These proposals included an important addition to the matters discussed at the previous meeting in that they provide for membership at the nominal subscription of a guinea for graduates of the University who are resident outside Otago and Southland. It was believed that many persons would regard this as an interesting link with’ their alma mater. The draft constitution was the joint work of Messrs Stephens and Paterson, and it must have made considerable demands on their time and energy. A vote of thanks for their care and attention was carried by acclamation. The committee was empowered to acquire premises and to take steps to raise the necessary funds. There is still room for original membora, and the greater the support; received in these initial stages the more secure will bo the position and the better the standing which the club will take.
