MOSGIEL DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL
Mr A. Cameron presided over the monthly mooting of the Mosgiel District High School Committee. The rector reported the attendance at 352 o.ut of 372. On hearing that (ho secondary department would be closed as_ from the 30 (h inst., he sought to find the intentions of the parents of the Standard VI children ns to the secondary education of their children. Ho had found that ten proposed sending their children next year. This, with the eight at present in attendance was evidently not sufficient to induce the department to continue the secondary work in Mosgiel. He had a donation of 255, for which he should like the committee’s authority te spend on books for Standard V use. This sum, with (lie board's subsidy. would enable the school to get 50s worth. This was approved. Miss Brossey resigned her position as secondary assistant, having been appointed senior secondary assistant at Normal School. —lt was resolved to place on record the services Miss Brossey had rendered to the school. Correspondence was read from the Education Board to the effect, that, owing to the small attendance at the secondary classes, the Council of Education had recommended the Minister to close this department on June 30. The free places of the pupils now ,in attendance would bo transferred to the Otago High Schools, the Dunedin Technical College, or the secondary department of the Dunedin Normal School, whichever of these institutions the parents of the pupils may desire their children to attend. The head master of the Mosgiel School had been asked to notify the parents of the impending cessation of the secondary instruction at. Mosgiel.—lt was decided thgt Messrs Paterson and Bacon wait on the chairman of the Education Board, te write to Mr M'Kinln.v (the representative of the committee on the boardl. and Mr J. M‘C. Dickson, M.F., asking them te use their endeavours to present the threatened change taking place, 'there was every h'opc that the attendance next year would be well up to requirements. The unsuitability of the school gymnasium—an unfilled building—as a class room was commented on bv the Visiting Committee. The rold was intense, and it was very unreasonable to keen children at their lessons in the building in winter. —lt was decided to again approach the board on the matter.
