SCHOOL -GARDENS
WINNERS OF COMPETITION,
Mr E. S. Green (Chief Instructor in Agriculture) has submitted to the Otago Education Board a report giving the following results of the school competitions during the past season; — Competition for carrots, onions, parsnips, and beet.—Carrots (long Variety): Clyde 1, Green Island 2, Momona 3. Carrots (stumprooted) : Green Island 1, Clyde 2, Benhar 3. Parsnips: Momona 1, Green Island 2, Awamoko 3. Onions: Clyde 1, Benhar 2, Green Island 3. Beet: Benhar 1, Naseoy 2, Momona 3. Best-kept School Garden.—(a) Limited to sole teacher schools: Pukepito. (b) Other than sole teacher: Benhar. 1 Potato Competition.—Benhar A 1, Green Islapd A 2, Beaumont B 3, Beaumont A 4. In commenting on these competitions, Mr Green emphasised the interest which they had aroused and the tangible results which has been attained. He recommended that certificates be awarded to the following schools:—Benhar, Pukepito, Green Island, Arthur Street, George Street, Evansdale, Beaumont, Teaneralu, and Naseby. In conclusion, Mr Green referred with satisfaction to.the planting of trees and shrubs which had been carried out by the George Street School Committee, and stated that the results could not but nave a refining influence on the pupils who are in daily contact with surf: a pleasing environment. On the motion of the Chairman (Mr Wallace), it was agreed to authorise the issue of the certificates as recommended. The, board also passed a resolution of appreciation of the interest taken'in agricultural work by the school children and the teachers.
