GAELIC SOCIETY
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Gaelic Society was held last evening in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Stuart street. The hall proved too small to accommodate all the members and friends of the society, and additional seats had to be obtained. The Chief, Dr M’Killop, and Chieftains J. D. Cameron and D. Munro, occupied seats on the platform, Chieftain D. Munro being spokesman. Chieftain D. Munro thanked the society for electing him chieftain. On a former occasion when chieftain he had the honour to welcome the late Major-general Sir Hector Macdonald. The Dunedin Irish Society had sent an invitation for members of the Gaelic Society to pay them a visit, and Chieftain D. Munro asked members to avail themselves of the invitation. He had travelled in many parts of the world, and nowhere had he been more kindly treated than in Ireland. They were all members of the great Celtic race, and their sentiments and traditions in many respects were similar. The society recognised no creed or politics, Lm endeavoured to keep alive the traditions of the race. He also wished to welcome Mr Gray, president of the Gore Highland Society, and called upon him to occupy a seat on the platform. Mr Gray thanked the society for its hearty reception. He was glad to hear Highland melodies and see the Highland dances.
