FISSURE IN THE EARTH. FIVE THOUSAND FAMILIES IN THE OPEN. Press Association—By Telegiaph-^Copyright-ROME, May 7. The collapse of Corato disclosed an extraordinary story of human vicissitude. The town had rapidly progressed from a tiny village to an important industrial and commercial centre, and the buildings were among the finest in Italy. The. soil is composed of clay and sand. Torrential rain fell after a nine months’ drought. The water accumulated in a fissure in tne earth, and filtered through under the foundations of the buildings, which collapsed. The first to fall was the magnificent new Church of the Madonna. Five, thousand families are sleeping in tents and huts antUin the open. They ore meeting their sufferings bravely. The Government. sent troops and workmen and material to erect temporary shelters.
The preliminary vote of 9,000,000 lire is exhausted, and a further 50,000,000 lire are necessary. , Violent storms are increasing the sufferings of the homeless, who are panicstricken.— A- and N.Z. Cable.
