DUNEDIN PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY.

The annual meeting of the Dunedin Philharmonic Society was held last week. The following report ,and balance sheet were adopted:—“The past year has been a successful one in every way. The rehearsals on the whole were satisfactorily attended, and members took a keen interest in the work of the - society,! with the result that the society’s four concerts were highly commented upon. As usual, four concerts were held in His Majesty’s Theatre during the year. It is with regret that the committee has to report the loss the society has sustained by the removal from Dunedin of Mr H. B. Austing. Mr Austing at all times took a keen interest in the welfare of the society, and for the past two years has edited the programme for each concert. It is also wtih deep regret that/the"committee has to record the death of one of our members —Mr J. W. Pinnock —and to his relatives it desires' to convey the members’ deepest sympathy. The balance sheet shows a very satisfactory position. The' council, along with other societies’ executives, has protested to the Government against the imposition and hardship that the amusements tax will means to such societies as this, which are purely of an. educational nature and not in any way deriving personal profit. What success may attend the action has .yet, to be learned. The council is definitely averse to any proposal to interfer with present subscription rates, as some societies in the dominion purpose doing. It. would much prefer to widen its circle of subscribers to passing it on. It is at least imperative'that the present subscription list be maintained.” The following officers were elected: —President, his Honor Mr Justice Sim; vicepresidents—Drs A. J. Hall, W. Evans, and W. P. Gowland, Messrs P. R. Sargood and W. J. Morrell, Misses M. D. Stewart and I. M’Lean; bon. treasurer, Mr F. W. Bavley; secretary, Mr E. S. Wilson; non. auditor, Mr A. Williamson ; bon. librarian, Mr N. ' Shepherd; assistant librarian, Mr W. Fielder; committee —Messrs H, W. Paine. H. B. Austing, J. Mathieson, and Dr 'Elder.
