CITY COUNCIL REPORTS

■ The General Committee of the City Council ‘reports that the contractors for “the removal and disposal of the oftel from the City Abattoirs have made application , for a subsidy from the council to . recoup them for the loss which they state; they are incurring in treating _the material at their works. As the applicants are working under an agreement with the council which does not expire until September of next 1 year, they hitve been advised that the council is bound by such agreement, the terms of which must prevail until the date mentioned. . , . ' The Electric Power and Committee reports that the quotation of Messrs M'Lachlan and Wright (Ltd.), Dunddm, m the sum ofv£336 9s lid for the .supply of timber required 1 for the extension works at Waipori Falls, has ■ been accepted. Eleven quotations were received, the one accepted -being the lowest. The Tramways Committee reports having considered the tenders received for the motor and reduction gear for the Mornington main lino. The electrical engineer reports that the apparatus was designed to permit of the existing steam ■ plant being used as a standby, and the resulting tenders indicate that the plant would. not be efficient and -would be expensive in operation. It will, be possible to re-design the electrical plant and . gear so as to obtain a satisfactory combination if the proposal to ■retain -the steam plant as a stand-by is eliminated. The committee is of the opinion that there is no real need- for a stand-by, and therefore begs to recommend that fresh tenders bo called for an electrical plant designed on the understanding that the steam plant will not be used as a stand-by. The committee .also reports that quotations are being obtained for a new rope for the Roslyn line. The Finance . Committee reports that instructions have been given to cease taking further subscriptions for the Waipori loan meanwhile, as there is now sufficient money in hand to meet the department’s requirements. In the meantime deposits are being accepted for a- period of 12 ‘months at 4£
