S.S. TASMANIA. DRY-DOCKING PROBABLY NECBS- ' SARY. When the Tasmania grounded in Bluff Harbour a few days ago it was considered that she grounded on soft botkyu. She missed a boulder-strewn bottom by about 20ft, it was said. That estimate was evidently wrong, because it is now reported that the vessel since she was berthed at wharf, after being floated off the bank on which she grounded, when steaming up the harbour, lias been leaking. Rumour allege® that a considerable amount oi water found its way into the holds. The Tasmania after loading over 3000 tons of ore in Australia, also bunker coals to a somewhat similar amount, came over to New Zealand to complete her Homeward loading. Altogether she will probably- have four or five thousand tons of cargo aboard, apart from her bunker supplies for tb© Homeward trip. To get .at any leakage the vessel will probably have to go into dry dock, and prior to docking the cargo usually has to be discharged. There are, of course, a large number of unemployed steamers laid up at Port Chalmers, and their empty holds could probably be used to .stow the Tasmania’s cargo in, if she has to go into dock. The Tasmania may leave the Bluff to-day for*. Port Chalmers, where many other damaged steamers have had permanent repairs effected. MAKALLA PROM LONDON. The C. and D. Lin'e advises that the steamer Makalla, now discharging London cargo at Anokland, is to leave the latter port next Tuesday for Wellington and New Plymouth to complete discharge. THE OVERDUE MANUREWA. According to the Sydney Shipping List, the vessel left Sydney on March 31 for Newcastle, where she had been fixed to load a cargo of boal for Kaipara. The Manurewa, which was formerly known as the Yale Royal, was built at Glasgow in 1884, and is owned by Messrs A. S. Paterson and Co. (Ltd.), of Auckland, and Captain ■R. G. Holmes. The. vessel has made several trips from San Francisco to New Zealand with case oil cargoes. _ MOERAKI FOR SYDNEY. AN UNCHARTED ROCK. An uncharted rock has been located in' the Day of Plenty by Captain Bollons, _of the Government steamer Tutanekai, which arrived at Auckland on Saturday afternoon. A "break” in the vicinity of where the rock was found was reported to have been seen by the captain of a Northern Company’s steamer some time ago. Following the report' Captain Bollons was requested to visit the locality with the Tutanekai. He spent all last Thursday dragging the bottom near the position reported, and succeeded m finding a rook situated half a mile northeast of the north-east point .of the Aiderman Island. It is awash at low water neaps. It is fortunate that the rock has been discovered, as it lies in the track of shipping and the- chart does not show any danger there, hut is marked 62 fathoms over. Later a Gazette notice will be issued warning mariners of the danger. NEW ZEALAND SHIPPING COMPANY.
