Mr Ambrose Chiaroni, who has recently returned to New Zealand, has brought with him a very fin© collection of paintings, statuary, Florentine pottery, and Venetian glass, which are to be offered for sale at auction on Monday and Tuesday night bv Messrs Park, Reynolds (Ltd.). The goods are now oibview at the Art Gallery Hall, and yesterday attracted the attention of quite a number of connoisseurs. The paintings, which are in both oils and water colours, are from the easels of artists who have won fame not only in Great Britain, but on the Continent, and the originals of some of them, are now in noted galleries. The following artists are repressed in the collection:—Carlo Menegazzi (Professor of the Royal , School of Art, Vittorio Venoto); F. -J. Kell, who is master of an important art school at Sydenham, London; A. Camithers Gould, R.8.A., an artist of the original Impressionist School; A. J. C. Bryce, R.8.A.; Hely Smith, R.B.A. (some of whose work is in the Canterbury Art Gallery); W. . Luker, Jun., R.B.A. (son of the famous painter); A. Buzzi (a well known Roman artist) ; E. Augusti; Henry H. Bulman, , R.8.A.; 6. Grant Rowe, R. 1.; J. S. Blunt, R.8.A.; E. H. Thompson, of Dunedin (now in London); Albert Kingsley, R.T.R.C.A. ; G. E. Koek-Koek. A very fine Jpiece of genre work is the oil painting The Misers,” by Quintin Matseys, representing two old men, “ garbed in quaint costumes, counting over their hoards. Menegazzi is very largely represented. His work is for the* most part characterised bv broad and confident treatment _ and rich colouring. Amongst his collection may be specially mentioned Nos. 2 (“Farm Scene, Northern Italy,” water colour): 37 (“Corner of the Dope’s Palace, Venice,” water colour), 50 (“Riva Schiavoni, Venice,” watercolour), 81 (“Connepliano. Italy.” oils), 221, 244, and 253. Henry' H. Bulman has a very characteristic and strong water colour in “The Tramps at Horae” (No. 49). There axe several paintings by G. E. Butler, who has made wonderful ' strides in England, amongst them being Nos. 50 (“The Old .Grenadier ’) 150 (“A Washing Day in Belgium’), and 259 (“Coming From Church, Antwerp ”). But to merely enumerate works of • outstanding merit would occupy more space than we have at our disposal. Mention must, however, be made of a number of etchings by A. W. Hayes, which are exceptionally attractive works, and several of them (such as Jenny Wren’s House, London, immortalised bv Charles Dickens, are of peculiar interest i from historical or other association. There are several statuettes, replicas in miniature of works of renown, and all worthy of a place in any art-lovers s collection. In addition, there are some striking samples of the Venetian glassblower’s art, No. 29 (a vase) being an especially attractive piece of work, all being worked on or in and not painted. Tpe sale should attract a large attendance of buyers. The collection will be open for inspection on Sundnv between 2 and 4-p.m., so that the general ' public may have an opportunity to \ - iew it.
