MR CAMPBELL EILECTED CHAIRMAN. OFFICE OF DEPUTY CHAIRMAN ABOLISHED. The statutory annual meeting of the Otago Harbour Board was held yesterday itfterrjoon tor the purpose of electing a chairman for the ensuing year. Thare were pieueqli—Alessrs T. Scollay (chair man), 11. C. Campbell, J. Loudon. J. M'Donald, K. S. Ramsay, J. M. Dickson, J. A. Roberts, IV. Wilkinson, J. H. Walker. IT. E. Moller, X. Galbraith, A. Cable, and D. Larnach. RETIRING CHAIRMAN’S REMARKS. Mr Scollay said that before leaving the chair he would like to point out that although the prospects had not been bright, during tlie year owing to the trade depression the year had been a very satisfactory one and the board'had bee.n able to transfer money to its reserve account. The dredging operations had been earned out under somewhat adverse conditions, but in conformity with the board’s policy the work bad been continued in such a manner as to keep as many, men as possible employed. Continuing the chairman stated I hat despite all they had heard about the harbour it was never in a belter state for the reception of overseas vessels—both the upper and lower harbours was not. the slightest occasion why cargo carriers should not make Dtlnedin the first port of call from time to time instead of working down the coast, and thus placing local importers at a grave disadvantage. Mr Seollay went on to acknowledge live gpod services of the whole of the board’s staff during the -mast year. The masters of oversea vessels bad the greatest in Captain Thomson, and the harbourmaster had also reorganised his staff so- as to secure greater efficiency. In Mr Wilkie (the engineer) and Mr Bardsley (the secretary) they also had two officers who were deeply concerned with the welfare of the board and had Its best interests at,heart. — (Applause.) MR CAMPBELL ELECTED. On the motion of Mr Loudon seconded by Mr M'Donald, Mr 11. C. Campbell was then elected chairman of the board for the ensuing year. In vacating the chair Mr Scollay wished the new chairman a pleasant year of office. Mr Campbell, in reply, said he would at all times do his utmost to further the welfare of the board. DEPUTY CHAIRMAN ABOLISHED. Mr Galbraith moved in accordance with notice ‘‘that the office of deputy chairman be abolished!” Mr Walker seconded the motion. Air Cable moved as an amendment “thata deputy chairman be appointed every three months.” Air Scollay seconded the amendment. On being put to the meeting the amendment was lost, and the motion pbolishing the office of deputy chairman was carried by eight votes *lo four. APPOINTMENT OF COMMITTEES. The following were appointed for the ensuing year: - - Works Committee.—Alessrs Cable, Larnach, Moller, Ramsay, Walker, and Wil-' kinson. Finance Committee.—Alessrs ■ Dickson, Galbraith. Loudon, M'Donald, Roberts, Russell, Scollay. Reserves Committee. —Messrs Galbraith, Larnach, M'Donald, Ramsay, Roberts. Russell. Wilkinson. Dock Committee.—Alessrs Cable, Dickson, Loudon, Mollenj Scollay, and Walker, It was decided that the meetings of the board and the committee should be held on the same corresponding dates as last year. RESOLUTION OF APPRECIATION. On the motion of Mr H. C. Campbell, seconded by Mr J. M. Dickson, the following resolution was carried unanimously : “That the board places on record its high appreciation of Air Thomas Scollay’s services as chairman of the board during the past year, and that the secretary be authorised to have the customary address engrossed, to be signed by the chairman on behalf of the board for presentation to Mr Scollay.”
