ST. GLAIR BATHS.

TO THE EDITOB. Sir,—A few weeks ago I wrote pointing out the valuable asset the City Council had in its St. Clair baths provided that it took reasonable steps to protect its properly and provide accommodation for intending patrons. On several occasions since writing you I have visited the baths, and it invariably- happens that intending patrons have to wait a considerable' time, before there is a vacancy. This is unfortunate, and I think that in the interests of the public three or four more baths should be provided. Further, it appears to me that the approach to the baths is a disgrace to a city such as Dunedin and not at all in keeping with the general tone and the residences of St. Clair. To gay the least, it is dilapidated, and I think the caretaker’s house should be brought up to date ami in keeping with the band rotunda and esplanade. Strange to say. the baths are ' not connected by telephone. A gentleman living at Anderson’s Bay. and wishing to make arrangements for massage treatment, rang un the writer and wished to know if the baths were connected by telephone, and if not, why not? A visiting friend from Christchurch waxed sarcastic when shown our St. Clair Baths. “You. should see-the hot salt water baths we have at New Brighton. Why, even Timaru. with practically no natural advantages -such as you enjoy in Dunedin, -is alive to and caters for the public. You Dunedihites seem to think that any old thing will do. - You certainly have the goods. Why don’t vou deliver them?” I trust the council will seriously consider the position as it affects it from a general standpoint, and I am sure that, if this is done and in an impartial manner, before long the city of Dunedin will have salt, water baths and an approach to them that are a credit to this our beloved city.— 1 am, etc., E. Oswald Reilly.
