It is probable that shortly there will be another deduction in ocean passenger fares (says the London correspondent of the Manchester Guardian of March 12). Many liners during the last few weeks have left these shores with only a handful of passengers ( n board, and there have been anxious conferences dhring the past few days of shipowners in Fenchurch avenue and other shipping headquarters to decide what can be done. > Two reductions in wages have already been agreed to, and there has 1 also been a considerable drop in the cast of stores and provisions on board. Those liners, too, that rely on oil instead of o6al have found their working expenses lower. . But insurance still remains a heavy charge in view of the ab- y normal increase in capital valued. Port charges show little sign of decrease, and the wages of dock employees continue to be very high. • Repairs and alterations are still expensive, but it is clear that fares must reach a more reasonable level if the present losses are to be cut. This will entail a. further decrease in capital values through interest on capital, os well as further drops in wages at the ports, but in the opinion of a well-known shipowner with whom I was discussing the matter, passenger fares must come down in the near future. TURNBULL, MARTIN, AND CO, Turnbull, Martin, and Co., the local agents for the Fedleral Steam Navigation Company, report the following movements:— The A. and A. Line steamer City of Winchester, which is under the agency of the Federal Line, will complete the discharge of SCO tons of general cargo at Dunedin this afternoon, and, will then load for London at Timaru, Oamaru, New Plymouth, and Wellington, under the auspices of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company. She is expected at Wellington about May 12 to com plete loading, and will sail about five days later for London, via Cape Horn. The Cornwall is now due at Port Chalmers this .morning from Liverpool, via Auckland!, Wellington, and Lyttelton. She discharged at Auckland 1700 tons of cargo, 2000 tons at Wellington, 1600 tons at Lyttelton, and has 1400 tons for Port Chalmers. Galvanised iron was loaded at Avonmouth; locomotives, heavy machinery, and whisky at Glasgow; and salt,' basic slag, and special lines at Liverpool. She is not able to come up to Dunedin owing to her deep draught. The CorfiwaU'is a vessel of 10,669 tons. Captain H. W, Robinson, who is in command, has with him the following officers:—Mr L. H. Foragher, first; second, Mir A. E. Lettington; third, Mr T. J. Breen; fourth, Mr E. A. Forster; chief engineer, Mr A. Drummond; chief steward, Mr S. Blackburne.
