WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL

( The monthly meeting of tho Waikouaiti County Council was bold yesterday; present—Crs M'Gill (chairman), Overton, Gilmore, MT.achlan ,and Briscoe. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The inspector reported that 132yds of gravel had been .spread on M'Callum’s road. A few chains of the Main road had been topdresse! with grave! and -a truck of Shag River gravel had been used to fill ruts in the road .near Tumai station. The remainder of Sandy’s Track had been graded, sonic sharp corners cut off, and two culverts extended. Stenhouso road had been graded throughout. The worst portions of the road between Kiatoa and Payne’s run were now toeing repaired. Bulche'r road had been, surfaced from the woolshed to the end 'of the road, new beams and planks had Been put on the bridge near Merton factory ,and a start had been made with the metalling contract on Pryde’s road. Thirteen loads of rotten rock had been carted out to fill in the worst holes on the road, and it was being prepared for the metal. Two trucks of metal were required to repair the road on both sides of Omimi station. About 30yds of rotten rock from Hammond’s quarry would fill the holes on the Main road to near the factory. A washout on the Karitane road had been repaired. The road w»ich Mr Taine wanted improved was three and ahalf chains in longfh and would cost £3 to grade and £lO to gravel. The bridge on the Main road near Waitati quarry on the Quarry roiid had been repaired. The straightening of the curves on the Main road was nearly finished. A bridge on the WaitatirWaknri road had been repaired, and the fords put in order. Two days’ carting of stone was required to repair the Bong Beach road. Metal had been broken and potholes filled on the Main road at Mount Cargill and culverts repaired on the Waitati-Wakari and Reservoir roads. The report was adopted. It was decided to procure material from Hammond’s quarry for the Main road, to pay half tho cost of the repairs desired by Mr Taine, and to carry out repairs to Long Beach road as recommended. Cr Overton drew attention to the State of the Main road near Mount Cargill.— The Chairman admitted the road was bad. but' said it would take more than the North-East Valley rates to maintain it. — It was resolved, on the motion, of Cr Overtoil, to call again for tenders for repairs to the road up Id £IOO. , CORRESPONDENCE. T. Downes, surfaceman for Bhieskin Riding, resigned as from May 51. —Applications to be invited. K. C. Treweck (Scacliff) asked permission to out. a load of manuka scrub on the roadside between Warrington and Evansdale. — Granted, subject to inspector’s approval. H. Copper asked permission to fence across Meadow street, Warrington, below Miss Knight’s section.—lnspector to renoi-t. W. A. Gardiner asked the council to have removed a two-roomed crib, owned by Messrs Douglas and Knox, Dunedin, on the roadline opposite bis property in Warrington West, as it was interfering with the sale of his section. —Inspector to report, H. Townsend (Waikouaiti) asked for permission to transfer tho lease of Steep Hill reserve to his brother. —Agreed to. 0. Crawford (Omimi) applied for permission to -form an entrance into part section 79, block I, Waikouaiti.—Granted, subject to inspector's approval. D. J. Buchanan, conservator' of forests' for Otago, drew the council’s attention by circular to the benefits of free planting and to the readiness of tho service to supply trees on favourable terms.—Received. TI. T. Parata drew the council’s attention to a very grave nuisance—the straying of horses and cattle on the roads nt Puketeraki —and to the dilapidated condition of the gates and fences.— It. was decided to call tor applications for a part-time ranger at a salary of £ls. with fees. H. C! Campbell (Dunedin) drew the council’s attention to the state of some building timber at Purakanui, -which was in a verybad state with (he borer, and to the danger that, if building were allowed, the surrounding houses would soon bo affected.—Received, the inspector having attended to the matter. The Chairman read a letter from A. Little, surfaceman, asking that an allowance of Is a day should bo paid to surfacemen while in camp, and stating that the Taicri men were paid 2s. —Cr Graham: lie’s getting to be a chronic. growler.—No action was taken with the letter. The Waihemo County Council sought, support for a resolution proposing that the auditing of hospital board accounts should be nerformed free by the Government Audit Department.—Received. The Mayor of Dunedin (Mr J. S. Douglas), in a circular explaining tho dominion effort for the Russian Famine and Starving Children of Europe Relief Fund, invited the council to undertake a collecting campaign in its own area, and to forward (he proceeds to Dunedin for transmission to the Department of Internal Affairs. It, was suggested that May 5 be set apart for the purpose.—Left to the chairman to consult the Mayor of Waikouaiti. 'The secretary. Otago Hospital Board, advised that local contributing authorities would be called upon to provide £45.000, inclusive of half capital expenditure (£2500), for the year, as compared with £40,268 9s! without capital expenditure, last year. The amount, wos subject to adjustments when the estimates were made up.—Cr Briscoe observed that, the levy was mounting up at an alarriiing rate. —Received.
