ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
LEVEL CROSSING ACCIDENT. (Per United Press Association.) WAIMATE. April 26. A motor car conveying Mr and Mi's MTlraith and two children and Mrs R. M‘Leay and two children ran into a train, at the railway crossing at Waihoa Forks to-day. The train struck the motor car at a slight angle, and the vehicle was thrown clear, but was smashed to matchwood. Mrs MTlraith sustained injuries to her spine and head, and was taken to the hospital. The other occupants were bruised and shaken only. A SUDDEN DEATH. _ WELLINGTON, April 36. Jacob Smith, aged 60, a_ timber yard worker, was found dead in his bedroom today, and it is believed that death was due to heart failure. SURF BATHER DROWNED. WELLINGTON, April 26. Mr Charles William Allen manager of the Bank of New Zeeland at Woodville, while holidaying at Pa'ekakariki, went bathing on Monday afternoon, was caught in the undertow, and drowned before his wife’s eyes. A man named Wilson, though an indifferent swimmer, made a plucky but ineffectual attempt, to rescue Allen, and then ran half a mile to the surf club's shed: whence, two members hurried out. They brought Mr Allen’s body ashore, and efforts to restore respiration were continued by a doctor for two hours, but proved fruitless. ■William Mowat, aged 24, residing at Harbour terrace, was admitted to the Hospjtal last night suffering from, injuries to his head, caused by a. collision with a motor car' in Stuart street while he was riding a bicycle.
