SCHOOL MEMORIALS
THEIR SPECIAL SIGNIFICANCE. SPEECH BY LORD JRLLIOOE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) AUCKLAND, April 23) , "Any memorial in a school that perpetuates the sacrifice and devotion to duty of those who gave their lives or served in the war is bound to act as an incentive to the children of that school to live up to the ideals set before them by those who so nobly served their, country,” said the Governor-general (Viscount Jellicoe) at' the opening of the memorial gates at the Reninera Main Public School. His Excellency was saying how specially he regarded it as an honour and a privilege to perform suoh ceremonies at schools. “There is another aspect with regard to school memorials,” continued his Excellency. “They cultivate the spirit of esprit do corps or pride of school, and no finer spirit than (his can be developed among the boys of a school. It is this spirit in the schools of the Old Country that has made iheir old boys do great deeds? and. similarly, the girls and boys of (his country will have to remember That they must, always live up to the great record set before them by the men whose memory they honour. We hope and pray that thev may never he called upon to serve Iheir King and their country in the same manner as those who have gone before them and made great sacrifice, but there is just as much to be done in peace as in war by trying to live up to the ideals for which , these men have fought and died. They were imbued with >a high sense of duty. -They felt that they must protect the weak, and they did so. showing a spirit of gallantry which all who follow after will do well to emulate-.”
