DUNEDIN ORPHANS’ CLUB

The annual meeting of members of the Dunedin Orphans’ Chib was held last night in St. Paul’? Schoolroom, the president (Bro. G. W. MTntosh) in the chair. There was a good attendance. A resolution of sympathy with the relatives of members who had died during the year was passed, members standing. The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, said he was pleased to see that the membership roll had been well sustained. During the year 52 new members had been elected, as against 44 in the previous year. After allowing for resignations and removals, the club roil at the end of the season numbered 240, including life and orchestral members He would like members, however. to endeavour to secure more performing members. The more they had the more interesting \yould he the programmes provided. He was sorry that they could not show a credit balance, the statement of revenue and expenditure showing a debit balance of £2l 6s Bd. As against this the assets showed a surplus over liabilities of £152 19s lOd. A good deal of moneyhad gone 'in non-recurring outlay, such as the purchase of tables and chairs. The financial position did not cause the executive any concern. During the year they had derived considerable pleasure from visits from the South Canterbury Savage Club and the Christchurch Savage Club, and the executive had promised to return these visits. They had experienced great pleasure in entertaining Lord Jellicoe. and had also been honoured by the GovernorGeneral accepting the position of patron. The ceremony of installing chairmen of meetings had been instituted, and the executive felt, deeply indebted to Bros. Wycherley, Russell, and Hutton for their work in this connection It was with deep regret that he referred to the death of Bro. Dugald M’Pherson, immediate past president, who died on December 25. Bro. MTherson was president of the club from 1909 to 1912, and always took a keen interest in its welfare. His activity in 1909 was the means of placing the club on a sound basis. The deaths of Bros. Alex. Scott and A. H. Jenkins were also recorded • both were enthusiastic members. Bro. C. J. L White seconded the motion, which was carried. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. Bro. H. F. Nees moved that Bro. G. W. MTntosh' be re-elected president. He had proved himself the right man in the right place. The motion was carried unanimously. In returning thanks Bro. MTntosh sam he had been president for nine years. He felt it a very great honour, but if members considered at any time that it would be in the interests ot the club to make a change he would gladly retire. Bro. A. C. Hanlon succeeded Bro. M'Pherson as immediate past president, and this created a vacancy among tha vice-presidents, which the executive hod filled by the election ot his Worship the Mayor_ (Mr J. S. Douglas). The other vice-presidents elected were as follows:- —Bros. T. W. Dobbie, H. F. Nees, R. Hudson, R. S. Wardrop; committee—W. R. Waters, K, 11. Bryant, H. Turner, A. Sligo, G. A. Wycherley, O. H. Russell, and E. H. Uavell; lion, auditors — Bros. Geo. M. Mac Lean and T. H. Thompson; conductor, Mr Jas. Coombs; non. secretary ant! treasurer, Mr R.’ C. T. Evans; pianist, Mr J. A. Haggitt. Bros. Turner and Russell filled seats on the committee vacated by Bros. 0. E Withers and R. Park, jun., the former of whom retired owing to ill-health and the latter in consequence of his removal to the North Island. Five new members were elected. The matter of arranging for the opening night was left in the hands of the executive. After the formal business had been disposed of, the meeting resolved itself into a, social gathering. The toast of “The President” having been honoured, a most enjoyable programme was provided by Bros. T. Bachop, L. Burrows, A. W. Gunn, S. Jeffs, E. Hendry, and A. W. Martin.
