RAM AND EWE FAIR
The Otago A. and P. Society’s annual r*m and ewe fair was held at Burnside yesterday. The conditions under foot were anything but pleasant owing to the wet weather of the past few weeks, but work was not pressing on the farms, and there was the usual attendance of buyers from Oamaru south to EdendlaJe end inland to Central Otago and Tapanui. _ Bidding, as was only to be expected in the present depressed state of the sheep market, was very slow. About half of the etod rams that were forward were passed over, though the number was doubtless reduced latex by private sales. The highest price was brought by a Romney-Marsh one-shear ram, sired by Tipua, which was sold for 21 guineas. The ram came from the farm of Mr Thoe. Lochhead, Balclutha. On account of the same owner a oneeheor Border Leicester ram was sold for 13 guineas and another for £ll 11s, while £lO 10s was given for one bred and offered by Mr Oliver Grey, of Milburn. Two one-shear Ronmey-Maxch rams, offered by Murray Bros., of Clydevale, brought £ls 15s, and 124 guineas respectively, and another, which was offered by Mr Adam King, of Stoney Creek, brought 101 guineas. The bidding on the whole was really little better than one would expect in the case of flock rams. Flock rams were yarded in relatively similar numbers to last year, but the demand, except fox the beet qualities, dragged considerably in the Eomney-Marsh section. Best grades of Border Leicesters met with a (air sale, bringing a guinea a head above last year’s prices. A considerable number of the Romney-Marsh sheep were passed, and the prices were much on a par with those realised last sale. There was a fair entry of Corriedale flock rams, and competition ■was brisk. There were no Lincolns or Downs penned. A coneignment of Ronmey-Marsh flock rams from Mr W. D, Hunt (Waikiwi) brought from 6 to 6i guineas, and Messrs Murray Bros. fClydevale) sold several pens up to 4$ guineas. Mr J. A. Johnstone (Bushey Park) got 2i to 4J guineas, and a number of other lots were sold from 2to 8 guineas. Coxriedalee ranged from 2} to 11 guineas. Several pens of Mr Johnstone’s one-shear rams realised from 7J to 11 guineas, and Mr W. Ayson (Waikaka) got from 44 to 6} guineas fox his one-shear rams. ' In the Border Leicester section flock rams sold from'£2 2s to £5 6s, Messrs Murray Bros (Clydevale) securing top prices. The following report of the fair is supplied by the stock agents’ representative. The total yarding was slightly kes than last year, and there was an unusually small display of studs, the only two breeds represented in this dess being. Romney Marsh and Border Leicester. The quality of the studs as a whole, was disappointing. The highest price obtained was for a Romney Marsh shearling ram bred by and offered on account of Mr Thomas Lochhead (Balclutha), which realised 21 guineas. The same vendor got 13 guineas for a shearling Border Leicester. Other Romney and Border Leicester studs realised from 5 to 15 guineas. There was a numerous entry of Romney Marsh flock rams, and although the demand for the best sheep was good, there ware large passings of medium and indifferent pens. Mr w. D. Hunt’s (’’ Bainfield,” Waikiwi) consignment of IS topped the market, selling at from Gj* to 6 guineas. Border Leicester flocks were in fair demand if showing breeding, and in good condition, and sheep of this class realised from 3 to 5 guineas. Messrs James Gow, Murray Bros., Oliver Grey, and William Couser had amongst the best consignments. Flock Corriedales were in greater sttpplv than usual, but the bulk of the yarding wae of mediocre quality. There was a keen demand for the best sheep if well-gtowu, true to type and in good condition. Mr J, A. Johnstone (Bushey Park) topped the market with a consignment of 30, which sold at from 11 to 8 guineas. The outstanding feature of the gale was the absence of high-class studs and the low condition of many of the flock rams offered. Sheep in low condition, even if showing a fair amount of breeding, were unsaleable. It is hard to understand' why these low-conditioned animals are sent forward year after year. They fill up the market, and are usually eventually sold at a price quite uniemunexative to the vendors.
