Owing to the inclement weather last Monday there was only a small attendance at Leith Lodge’s meeting, presided over by N.G. Bro. F. Fox. Tho officers and members of the Phoenix Encampment paid an official visit, aind were welcomed by the N.G. Mention was made of the death of Bro Oliver at Toronto, who at the time of his decease was Grand Sire of the Sovereign Grand Lodge. The D.D.G.M. invited members to attend tho institution of a juvenile lodge at Roslyn. The election of delegates to the U.F.S. Dispensary Committee resulted in Grand Secretary Bro. W. Reid and P.G.M. Bro. D. M. Millar, the present delega+es, being re-elected. The lodge decided n enter for the initiatory competition, and arrangements were made in regard to rehearsals. After the business had been finished a pleasant social hour was spent, and the vote to the visitors was acknowledged by Chief Patriarch J. MTyor (Phoenix Encampment), N.G. Bro. Robinson (Unity), and P.G. Bro. Charles Bolton (Kensington Juvenile Lodge). The usual monthly meeting of the South Otago District and Degree Lodge was, considering the inclement weather, well attended. Degree Master Bro. J. MTvor, with the assistance of his officers, conferred the third degree upon three brothers, after which district business was proceeded with. It was found necessary to postpone the initiatory competition until tho latter half of May. Pro. Spencer, P.G., reported upon matters in connection with the official handbook. intimating that lodges had now been supplied, and that a satisfactory position generally had resulted. Names submitted by Linden and Maori Hill _ Lodges were approved of to form a committee to superintend the Highgato Juvenile Lodge, and permission was also given to the Kensington Juvenile Lodge to add three brothers to its Supervising Committee. Business concluded with the election of officers, in preparation for the annual installation, which will take place at the April meeting. The quarterly meeting of Linden Lodge, No. 19, held at Roslyn on March 22, was exceptionally well attended. N.G. Bro. Glover despatched an extensive order paper of more than usual interest. The lodge surgeon (Dr Newlands) wrote intimating that he would be absent from the dominion for about 10 months from the beginning of April. The secretary was authorised to circularise members of the arrangements made to fill the vacancy occasioned by the medical officer’s temporary absence. A letter was directed to be sent, to an esteemed veteran brother who had been overtaken by misfortune. P.D.D.G.M.’s Bros. Kemnitz and Smith were appointed delegates to the U.F.S. Dispensary Committee. Unexpected intelligence was to hand announcing the death at Toronto, on January 6, of Bro. Joseph Oliver, Grand Sire of the Sovereign Grand Lodge. In accordance with instructions issued by the chief executive officer of the Grand Lodge of Australasia, it was decided to drape the charter for a stated period as a mark of respect. In committee consideration was given to sundry details in connection with the institution of the juvenile lodge, and a proposal to give the juniors tho use of the hall rent free for 12 months was enthusiastically carried. A fine muster of visiting brethren, including a soldier brother from Montecillo, received and acknowledged the customary honours.
