RETURNED SOLDIERS
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association was held last night, Mr Hanson presiding. The following are the principal clauses in the executive’s report ; The financial membership of the association at February 28 stood at 2679. Since that date five active and two honorary members have been admitted, seven members have been received on transfer, and 11 members have been transferred out to other associations. We regret to have lo chronicle the death of one of our members, 8/2667, Jas. Mooney. The question of unemployment still continues to occupy the attention of your executive, and as this association’s attempts to secure some immediate consideration of the matter from the Dominion Executive proved abortive, it wag decided to circularise all associations throughout New Zealand asking them to bring before the members of the Canteen Funds Board in their district the advisability of loaning part of the canteen funds to local bodies with a view to providing work for returned men, and also the placing of certain sums in the hands of local executives to relieve distress among returned men during the coming winter. The advices received to date indicate that the proposals of the Dunedin Association meet with the favourable consideration of branches in other parts of the dominion. No further progress appears to have been made in the direction of a resumption of loans for building purposes, and latest advices were to the effect that nothing was hoped for until the retirement of the then Under-secretary for Lands. It is noted that a new appointment has been made to this position, and it is hoped that sometiling of a definite nature will bo made known at an early date. A committee has been set up by your executive to make full arrangements tor Poppy Day, and it is suggested that tho poppies will be sold on Friday. April 21. Portion of the proceeds will be forwarded to the widows and orphans of Northern Fr a n»c. who are responsible for the manufacture-of the poppies, and portion will be retained locally for ’relief of distress, if required, among unemployed returned soldiers during the coming .winter, ’ihe annual bowling fixture, Returned Soldiers v. The Dunedin Bowling flub, was played on March 18, but the inclemency of the weather did not allow of the game being played outright. Our thanks are due to the Dunedin Bowling Club fov the hospitality extended on this occasion. The report was adopted. Mr Henderson not being present, Mr Leedon moved Ids motion for an alteration to By-law No. 1, providing that nominations for the executive should be receivable up till 5 p.m. on the day before the annual meeting and that if sufficient nominations were not received n ballot should be taken at the meeting for the remaining vacancies. -The motion was carried. The secretary was instructed to write again to the Public Service Commissioner pressing the association’)? request for a return showing the number of returned soldiers who hod been retrenched.
