CITY COUNCIL REPORTS
The Works Committee reports that a communication has been received from the Wellington City Council in which support is asked in protesting against the legislation regarding commission on the upkeep of roads and bridges'leading to the city, but outside the limits of the city area. The committee is strongly of the opinion that the council should co-operate with the Wellington City Council in the matter, and to that end the town clerk had been instructed to communicate with the Minister of Public Works pointing out the pernicious and unfair provisions of the Jaw. and asking that the repeal of the same be taken into consideraion and that a judge of the hupreme Court should be the commissioner to administer the section meantime. The committee also reports that the city engineer has been instructed to include for consideration in the proposed relief works schedule provision for constructing a pathway between George street and Pine Hill terrace at an estimated cost of £3OO. The Reserves Committee recommends that authority bo granted to carry out the following extensions and improvements to the Opoho Recreation Reserve —viz.: (a) Jt ill up the low corners next Opoho and a hollow next the plantation ; (b) Drain with agricultural pipes the side next the butts; (c) Level and top-dress the side next the butts so as to extend the playing area at least two chains; (d) Top-dress the whole area at the close of the coming football season; (e) Remove clay and other material at rear of pavilion so as to provide site for two tennis courts, and top-dress the courts with ashes and roll them in. Erect necessary netting and scrub shelter for tennis courts. The above works will provide two full-sized Rugby football grounds and two tennis courts. The cost is given by the superintendent of reserves (under whose direction the work would be done) at £250, of which amount the Garden Fete Society will contribute £lsl the Rugby Union £SO, leaving the balance fo £SO to be found by the council. The amount will be provided for in the allocations for next, financial year. The E.P. ai\d L. Committee reports that a petition has been received from residents of Wnipori asking what action the council intends to take regarding compensation for their interests, which may be affected by the building of the dam. A reply has been forwarded to the effect that the construction of the dam is a statutory work, and that if and when anything is done to injuriously affect the interest of anyone, the empowering Act prescribes a remedy. The committee also states that authority has been granted for the abandonment ’of a number of water rights on the Lee Stream and Taieri River, which were acquired several years ago with the idea of utilising them for the generation of electricity. There is not now any possibility that these rights will be made use of.
