THE ANNIVERSARY OF OTAGO.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir.— ln yesterday's issue of vour journal you report that " L’liis is the seventyion rib anniversary of Otago." Writ vdi» enlighten me as to why 1848 is taken for the commencement when vou publish* names of people who arrived eight year* earlier? Also hero, in Waimate. we have a man who was bom at Waikouaiti in May, I£4o. To my mind Otago should be celebrating the 82nd (or greater) anniversary of the settlement. Credit should be given to the real pioneers, although; c: course, we all recognise that fot maijr yeajs alter 1840 all arrivals had hard pioneering.—l am, etc., CCEIOtTB. Waimate, March 24. . [The Otago settlement is dated frbgi. 154 S because it was in that year that the pioneer vessels despatched under the colortisatioij* scheme arrived at Port Chalmers.—Ed? O.D.T.]
