During a Republican raid on the Maghera Police Barracks, Constable Eitzpatrick was shot dead. Bridges were blown up and the roads trenched to prevent pursuit.—A. and N.Z. Cable. Over 200 of the I.R.A. surrounded Maghera (Derry) and cut off the lights. They ordered the inhabitants indoors, and then captured the barracks. The raiders then retired to the Spring Mountains, w T hich are alive with members of the I.R.A. Ulster specials in force are trying to round thehi up.—A. and N.Z. Cable. REPUBLICAN PRISONERS. HUNGER STRIKE IN DERRY GAOL. LONDON, March 20. Twenty-five Republicans in Derry Prison who are undergoing long terms of penal servitude in connection with the recent border raids and kidnapping have commenced a hunger strike, as a protest against the denial of treatment hitherto accorded to political prisoners.—Reuter. CONDITIONS IN BELFAST. MURDER CAMPAIGN CONTINUES. A SERIES OF OUTRAGES. LONDON, March 20. (Received March 21, at 5.5 p.m.) The murder campaign in Belfast continues unchecked. Hills, an employee of the Corporation, was shot in the face in Templemore street, and died in a few hours. The Sinn Feiners also made a murderous attack on three Loyalist carters. One was seriously wounded Armefl men, who broke into her house, murdered Mrs Murphy, a Protestant who was married to a Catholic. The tension is most serious near the Ulster border. There have been several affrays. Sinn Feiners seized 30 Ulster motor-cars in County Donegal during the week-end and sent the drivers and owners home, telling them not to come back. Armed bands—members of the Republican Army—carried out a series of outrages in County Londonderry early on Monday morning. They set fire to and destroyed extensive flourmills at Ballyarton, and also sawmills, threshing mills, barns and other buildings. The fires lit up the country for riiles around. All the property, •which was valued at £40,000, belonged to members of the Ulster Constabulary. Several bridges were also blown up. Sinn Feiners ambushed Robert Mnllighan, an influential Orantreman, on the Monaghan frontier, and shot him dead. Constable Steenson, who was with Mullighan, was seriously wounded. Extremists in the south have also been active. They kidnapped a number of prominent local supporters of the Treaty in Cork, and removed them to an unknown destination.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
