The United States Lawn Tennis Association has announced that it will suggest that preliminary Davis Cup matches be played in the various countries of Europe, pointing out that the primary object of the Davis tournament is to assist the spread of interest in tennis throughout the world. It was at first thought that it would involve a minimum expense if the first and second round matches were played in the United States, but it is now felt that the additional expenses would not be justified. It is announced that dates set for the completion of the Davis Cup matches are: First ties, by June 24; second, by July 15; semi-finals, by July 9; final, by August 8. RUGBY FOOTBALL. The Portobello Miniature Rifle Club held its usual competition on Saturday last, under very changeable weather conditions. The ranges were 100, 150, and 200 yards. The following were the/scores:—H. The Dunedin Gun Club held its monthly slioot at Tahuna Park on Saturday afternoon, when, in addition to the usual trophies, the M'Bride Memorial Cup was shot for. There was a good attendance of shooters, and keen competition. The match was one of 21 birds, and although the day was far from perfect from a point of view, eight out of the 14 competitors got 19 breaks or better, which must be considered verv good shooting. A. N. Turner and A. King got the possible of 21, while G. E. Turner, A. B. Welch, and H. Smellie got 20 each. In the shoot-off a further eight birds were shot at. and A. King secured first place and A. Gillespie, 17yds, 18. OTAGO ATHDETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS. The chief athletic gathering of the season—the Otago Athletic Championships—are set down for Saturday next. The championship events will take pride of place, especially as the points will count towards the clubs’ contest for the List Banner. The Anglican and Artillery Clubs have mad© good progress this season, and will no doubt score well. Last year’s winners (University) will require to extend considerably to maintain the supremacy, as the Pacific champions are in strict training, and will make a hard fight for first place. Excellent entries have been received for the handicap events, which will give opportunities to a large number of competitors of average ability. LADIES’ GOLF.
