The London theatres are faced with the heaviest of frosts/ and plays are dropping like autumn leaves. Eleven were withdrawn last week. It was never more difficult to find successes. The position is variously attributed to high-priced seats, the entertainment tax, hard times, and kinemas. Covent Garden, the Empire, and Drury Lane are showing motion pictures. 'Music halls are similarly hit, and are combining to reduce the salaries of the ‘‘ top billers.” The managers agree that they must drasticallv curtail their expenses, and threaten to close a number of the halls.—A. and N.Z.
