The sensational end to the Bottomley libel case against Bigland astonished the public. ' Mr Bottom!cy explains that the trial would have occupied at least 21 days and cost many thousands of pounds; therefore he is seeking other'moans of dealing with Bigland’s .. chafes,, when- he (Bottomley) can conduct his own case. “At the Old Bailey,” said Mr Bottomley, “I would have been subjected to a week’s crossexamination in connection with every incident of my business life for the past io years.” - v ‘ The’ proceedings at the Old Bailey were so rapid (when Bottomley. failing an adjournment, tendered no evidence) that the public* had no time to make a demonstration ; but Bigland's friends gathered round the dock and congratulated him. Thera is still, a, case 'peiiding at the Shropshire Assizes, where Bigland stands accused of inciting seven people' to extort money from Bottomley during the Wrekin election;’'.
