Its object is to help to save the lives of some of the unfortunate children living in the famine areas of Central Europe, as wo did last year. Lord Weardale, chairman of the Save the Children Fund, writes to thank those who contributed so generously, and pleads for their continued support this year. 5,000,000 children are needing help at oneo! They have little food or clothing, and are so helpless for the future that many adults commit suicide rather than see their children sutler. ■ An eye-witnees, writing to the Birmingham Post, says that ho wont into a cellar, and by the aid of a candle saw three small children—poor little mites!—sitting all day without food or light, and only half clothed! 'This was in Vienna. Imagine the misery of it, and the need for help, and this case could bo multiplied by hundreds! The excellent system of organisation of tho committee in charge of this fund enables them to provide meals for one week for each child for 2s, but free to them,. Mr G. Lockett, a professional man, of Gisborne, writes to say that most medical men agree that, as a rule, we eat too much and too often. To be able to give to those who cannot get enough to eat he suggests that many might, with advantage to their own health, practise a self-denial .in meals and scrap one; if this were done, even for one day only each week, say, Friday, and give the saving of Is or 2s to our fund, many lives in Western Europe would bo made brighter. Wo have hard time® in New Zealand, but, even so, could manage with one meal less weekly, or one packet of cigarette® tho less; or, indeed, any other luxury for the sake of those who have nothing. F.
