BOWLING.

DOMINION TOURNAMENT. *'■ i ' ' >AJBS CONTEST STARTED. r PLAY STOPPED BY RAIN. The third day’s play of the dominion bowling tournament opened yesterday morning under favourable 1 weather conditions, and the greens playing very sweetlv. Tihere' was a bright sun and a fresh north: eastbreeze that} kept the air cool. The programme for the day was the opening of : the"'pairs championship, one round of '.which was to be played in the morning And .two in the afternoon. There are no fewer than 208 entrants, and play commenced, on the following 13 greens; —Dunedin, North-East Yalley, Green Island, West Harbour,’ Otatgo, Balmocewen, Kaituna, Kaikorai, Boslyn, Mornington, St. Clair, Caversham, and Caledonian. The first round, commencing at 9 a.m., and the second,, commencing at 1 p.m., were carried through smoothly and satisfactorily, but at ’ obput half-past four, when the third round . bad been in progress about an hour, rain began to fall, first lightly, and then in a deluge.' There was nothing for .it but to cease, play for the day, and though the; shower passed v off about six o’clock, by that time the greens had a heavy soaking. J. Turnbull end W. Spiller, Sydenham, who Won the dominion pairs’ championship two years ago at Christchurch, played on the Kaikorai green, and in the Jirst round had to lower Their colours to J. Johnson and S. Hutchison, of Dunedin, who beat them by 1$ to 14. In the second round, however, the ex-champions secured' a hafidaome victory over Hargreaves and F. Sharp, qf Bahgiora, the final scores being 29 to 11.' C. J. Bayne, of Kaituna. was unable to play after his accident on the green the previous day. and his place ’ in the doubles on the. Green Island Green was taken by J. Sanders. V. Casey and Pareons, of Ponsonby, are an outstanding pair, whose- progress will be | watched with in- . terest. _ Parsons was very well Vup in the , championships here four years ago, and is the present champion of champions in Auckland. Nevertheless this formidable pair met defeat in the first round after a very close fame with F. M. Shortt and F. Smith, of laitono. In the second round they scored a narrow victory over J. H. Matheson and W. A. Wilkinson, of Boslyn. by 22 to 19. Some interesting play was witnessed on the Boslyn green after lunch. Three sixes were registered. within a short interval on three different rinks,' one of them by Watson and Bascand (Edgeware) against Priddle and ' Wylie (Newtown). Wvlie got his own back ' f Jater,'. however. This 7 match was a dingdong, go throughout, and at the final head Wylie needed one, which ihe secured after the bell had gone. An extra head was i played, and Bascand lay nicely duth a protecting bowl. Wylie -got the shot out. and, ■ driving the protecting wood away with his last bowl, lay two, leaving Bascand the chance of a dear draw to the kitty. Bascand played, a good, shot, but just a trifle heavy, ■ leaving Wylie victor by a narrow margin. Duncan and Aitcheson (North-East Valiev) had a good finish against Fell and Lo • Fevre (Palmerston), both pairs being fofiCerl to bum heads at the close. Aitcheson eventually had a'majority of six, getting two ..threes. Results:— . ST, CLAIR GREEN V Section/ A. L First Bound. Best and Kerr (Masterton) 25 beat Henderson and Sinclair (Lyttelton) 23. .
