Ships on the Australian route south of the Cape are running the gauntlet of a field of icebergs, in about the 38th parallel. In the House of Commons the Speaker announced the reopening on Monday of the public art galleries, which were closed owing to the fear of Sinn Fein outrages. —A. and N.Z. Cable.
CATHOLIC FAITH FORSAKEN. ROME. October 18. Following a dispute with a parish priest, almost the whole population of the village of Seppiana has abjured the Catholic faith and become Protestants.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
ERECTION OF GRAIN ELEVATORS. CAPETOWN, October 18. Tho Union Government has placed a contract for the erection of 36 grain elevators with a Canadian firm. Most of the machinery will be purchased in England.—Reuter.
ISLINGTON DAIRY SHOW. LONDON, October 18. (Received Oct. 19, at 10.25 p,m.) At tho Islington Dairy Show Australia secured first, second, and third prizes for salted and unsalted butter. All three prizes for cheese went to Canada, and all three for bacon to South Africa. Neither Australia nor New Zealand was represented in cither class. The only competitor in Colonial honey was the New Zealand Honey Producers’ Association, which was awarded first prize.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
GOVERNOR OF TRINIDAD. LONDON, October 18. (Received Oct. 19, at 9,25 p.m.) Colonel Samuel Herbert Wilson, Assistant Secretary of the Committee of Imperial Defence, has been appointed Governor of Trinidad.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
