Professor Jack lias been appointed chairman of the Professorial Board, Otago University, for the ensuing term of three years. Mr William Stevenson, managing director of Irvine and Stevenson, who returned from a trip to the Old Country by the Tainui, arrived by the first express yesterday. The Hon. John MacGregor, M.L.C., and Mr E. Kellett, M.P., were passengers for Wellington by the second express yesterday. Mr J. B. Mr F. W. Gamble, senior Latin master, Auckland Grammar School, has been appointed head master of the new Grammar School at Mount Albert (says a Press Association telegram). Mr and Mrs William Crombie, of Manurewa, recently celebrated the diamond anniversary of their wedding at Auckland. Mrs Crombie was formerly Miss Isabella Wilson, being a daughter of Mr and Mrs George Wilson. Mr Crombie was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs James Orombie, of Caplodrae, Fifeshire, Scotland. The marriage took place at Peebles on October 2, 1861. Mr Crombie was for many years station master at Dunedin and Oamaru.

Mr A. E. Porritl, of the Otago Medical School, has been nominated as the Otago candidate for the Rhodes Scholarship. Mr Porritt was the only nominee at tho Otago University this year, and is the first student of the Medical School to receive nomination for this distinguished position. The University Council yesterday agreed to the nomination, and to the appointment of Professor Thompson as the Otago representative on the Selection Committee.

The following appointments are announced in connection with the local, branch of the Postal DepartmentMr J. C. M'Crea, chief postmaster, Napier, to chief postmaster, Dunedin; Mr B. E. S. Brodie, Auckland, to district accountant, Dunedin; Mr C. W. Matheson, of the local office, has been promoted to superintendent of mails; Mr A. J. Nioholls, of the Money Order and Savings Bank, to the position of accountant at Invercargill. These transfers and promotions will take effect as from December 1.

Mr G. A. Lamb, secretary of the South Island Dairy Association, received a cablegram from London yesterday stating that Mr H. J. Middleton, chairman of the New Zealand Producers’ Co-operative Marketing Association, and Mr Thomas Winks, who have been representing the dominion producers on the London directorate of the Association during tho past season, will leave London early in November on their return to Now Zealand. The _ dominion executive of the Marketing Association will meet in Wellington next week, when a director to take the place of Mr Winks on the London directorate for the present season will bo appointed. The friends ot Sir John and Lady Sinclair were deeply shocked yesterday to learn that Lady Sinclair had died suddenly on Monday night in the Midland Hotel, at Wellington, having passed away in her sleep. Sir John Sinclair, whom she had accompanied ro Wellington in order to stay there with him, during the Parliamentary session, is at present in Dunedin, having arrived here on Saturday night. Lady Sinclair was a sweet, lovable gentlewoman, and the sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended to tho bereaved relatives. She was a daughter of the late Mr Robert Chapman. Her family consists of two sons and three daughters,—Mr R. E. Sinclair, of Wellington; Mr J. S. Sinclair, solicitor, of Dunedin; Mrs F. E. Reading, of Wellington; Mrs T. G. M’Kellar, of Dunedin; and Mrs W. Raymond, of Timaru, At the commencement of the meeting of the University Council yesterday afternoon, tho Chancellor, the Rev. Dr Cameron, told the council that news had just come of the sudden and unexpected death of the wife of one who for three years hud been a member of the council and who was a well know citizen who had made his mark among them. Sir John Sinclair was a member of the council from 1909 to 1912. He was sure it was their desire that the council should send a letter expressing their sympathy with Sir John in (he sudden death of Lady Sinclair. The motion was carried by members standing in silence.
