UNIVERSITY COUNCIL

The regular meeting of the Otago University Council, held yesterday afternoon, was attended by the Chancellor (the Rev. Dr Cameron), Professor Hewitson, Drs H. Lindo Ferguson, W. Marshall Macdonald, Benham, Fitzgerald, Messrs J. H. Walker, W. Eudcy, J. C. Thomson, L. D. Ritchie, J. C. Stephens, W. J. Morrell, and J. W. Scurr. Leave of absence during the Parliamentary serssion was granted to the vicechancellor (Mr T. K. Sidcy, M.P.), and six months’ leave of absence was granted Sir James Allen. FINANCE AND MEDICAL COMMITTEES. Paragraph 4 of the report of the Finance and Medical Committees, dated August 30, 1921, vhich Was referred back to the committees for further consideration, was again reported on by them. In this paragraph the committees had recommended that Dr Grace Stevenson bo appointed to be Dr Brennan’s assistant for six months from September, 1921, at the rate of £350 per annum, but had recommended the council to take no action with reference to the appointment of student demonstrators. The committees / resolved that Dr Stevenson be appointed on the terms stated above, and that the following student demonstrators be appointed for the spring term ;in. the' pathology department—Messrs Allan,-Dud-ding, Hicks, and Lynch, at £lO each fdr the term, their remuneration to come from the special laboratory account. —The report was adopted on the motion of Mr L.* D. Ritchie. ' FINANCE COMMITTEE. The following matters were dealt with, by the Finance Committee alone:—Mr Scurr and Mr L. D. Ritchie reported having discussed with Dr Pickerill the proposal that the University ask the Hospital Board for an increased grant for the Dental School. They recommend this course being proceeded with. It was resolved that a deputation should wait upon., the Hospital Board, the deputation to consist of Dr Cameron, Mr L. D. Ritchie, Dr Macdonald, and Dr Pickerill. John Edmond Fellowship.—The committee recommended that the value of the John Edmond fellowship be increased from £2OO to £2lO nor annum, and that' the holder of the fellowship be required to pay £lO per annum as an apparatus fee. The committee further recommended that paragraph 6 of the regulations fao altered to provide, that, if results of economic value are achieved, one-third of this value be paid to the holder of the fellowship, onethird to the professor of chemistry, and the remainder bo added to the Fellowship Fund. They recommended that no further alterations be made. The Crown I.ands Department wrote reporting with reference to the Benmore reserves. It stated that the run said to be unoccupied was still in the occupation of the lessees, who had applied to surrender. The letter was received. A letter was received from the Education Department to the effect that the department could not grant any additional sum in respect to the biology buildings. It was resolved to pay ' over to the Students’ Association the Students’ Association fees collected during the year. Mr L. D. Ritchie, in moving the adoption of this report, said that the Hospital Board had agreed to receive their deputation, and asking for a further grant to the Medical School on October 27.—The report was adopted DENTAL SCHOOL. The Chancellor and Dr Ferguson reporting with reference to the teaching of anatomy to dental students wrote: —“In view of th" shortage of accommodation for the teaching cf anatomy, we have interviewed Drs Gowland and Pickerill with reference to tho possibility of altering the arrangements for teaching this subject to dental students. As a result of this interview we recommend as follows: (a) That the teaching of dental students taking the B.D.S. course be carried on os previously; (b) that students taking the C.O.P. course bo required to attend lectures as proviously. In addition to» the lectures it is recommended that they take a three months’ observation course under the supervision cf student demonstrators, eay, three. . such student demonstrators to be paid at the rate of £5 5s each for three months; the observation course to be followed by a course of dissection for a period of three months.”—Tho recommendations were adopted. PROFESSORIAL BOARD. The Chairman of the Professorial Board recommended that the council adopt the six years’ curriculum for medical students.— It was explained that if the proposal were agreed to students who had entered .on their course would not be affected.—The recommendation was adopted. Other clauses adopted included the following:—That, in future classes below the standard of'the pass degree shall not count for the keeping of terms, and that junior classes be abolished with the exception of German and Greek classes; that the following student assistants be appointed in chemistry for 1922:—Messrs O. C. Stephens and G. M. Moir at £lO 10s per month, and F. H. M’Dowall at £5 5s per month, the appointments to run for seven*months; a committee consisting of Professors Inglis, Benham, and the chairman, has been set up to make recommendations in re Edmond fellowship; the board has decided that for the keeping of terms a minimum attendance of 80 per cent, of lectures be required; the board recommends 1 that the fee for a special examination in any subject be £1 Is, the fee to be payable to tho examiner. CORRESPONDENCE. . The Director-general of Health notified that only three dental bursaries would be awarded in 1922.—-Received. Tho Sub-dean, Medical Faculty (Dr Drcnran) wrote in reference to the proposal that the council should contribute towards the salary of a teacher in massage. It was suggested that fees in tutorial surgery and tutorial medicine bo increased to permit of the proposed appointment.—Referred to the Finance and Medical Committees. Dr Dronnan further forwarded a report of the Medical Faculty on the resolution passed by tho council in regard to systematic and clinical teaching and the sufficiency of clinical material. These matters had been referred to various committees.—Received. Dr Milligan recommended the appointment of six demonstrators in histology during the spring term—viz, Messrs Morton, Turbatt, Comrio, C. H. Williams, Rawnsey, and Death —at £5 5s each.—Agreed to. Mr J. A. Gray forwarded a donation of £5 10s to be used for purchasing books for the ethnological department and the museum library.—Received with thanks. The Dean of the Medical Faculty forwarded a contribution of £ls 13s Bd, received through Mr G. L. Denniston, hon. treasurer of tho Empire Service League, and asked that the amount be added to tho dean’s fund. —Received, Mr Denniston and the league to be thanked. Professor Pringle forwarded a list of books ‘ required for the economics department. He pointed out that £47 9s had been received from his popular lectures.— Referred to the Finance Committee, with power to act. Tho Director of tho Training College forwarded a list of books which should be obtained for the education section.—Referred to the Finance Committee with power to act. Tho Hon. Secretary, Association of University Teachers, forwarded certain particulars concerning the association, and suggested that it was desirable that University teachers in the Old Country should bo more closely connected with the Universities in other portions of the Empire.—Received.
