CIVIC UNDERTAKINGS AND BORROWED MONEY. FOOD FOR THOUGHT. One frequently hears the remark that “the City Council own the Trams, the Electric Lighting, and other public utility services." The remark is not, always strictly in acordancq with fact. The real owners of these services are, of course, the people who advance the money which is spent upon the various undertakings. In a general way, it frequently happens that these “real owners" are absentee investors, who draw the heavy interest chargee for the use of their capital. The ideal state, of course, would be to possess these Public Services free of debt, and therefore _ free of interest charges. That, however, is not possible, and therefore the next beet thing is that the Citfeena themselves _ should ho the Investors and draw the interest which is earned by the several undertakings. The Citizens of Dunedin are just' now afforded the ohanoo to Invest their Savings in their own Civic Ventures, and thereby keep the interest charges on their loans for us amongst themselves. During the past few weeks about £167,000 has been received at the Town Hall for investment at 5 per cent, for 10 years, from which fact it is evident’ that the outstanding merits of ( the investment are fully appreciated. \ ‘ The City Council still require a largo sum of money to meet obligations for March next, and you may invest in sums of £SO or any multiple at 6 per cent, for’ 10 years. The interest is good; the security is perfect. These two facts, added to the conviction that in helping yourself you are helping your own City, should be the last word in a discussion regarding a choice of investment just now. Inquiry at the Town Hall, Dunedin, will bring yon any further information you may require.— Advt.
